The Easiest Way to Grocery Shop

This year I discovered something magical: online grocery shopping. I don’t know about you, but this was pretty life-altering for me. Sometimes I joke that “busy” is my middle name. Between running a business, a family, and trying to focus just the teensiest bit on myself every now and then, the groceries are usually at the bottom of my “to do” list. That is, until, we’ve run out of … well, everything. And then of course, if you have kids, you know what a struggle grocery shopping can be. Truthfully, long before I had a little one, trying to carve out time to shop for groceries (blah!), always seemed like such a chore, but having a toddler just amplified that tenfold. Scarlett is the cutest and makes friends with everyone in the grocery store. She also asks for a new snack on every single aisle, throws at least 75% of said snack on the floor, and by the frozen foods aisle, she’s about had it, and I find myself singing “The Wheels On The Bus” at least twelve times before we make it out of the grocery store in one slightly more frazzled piece. So when Walmart reached out with their new online ordering, I nearly jumped off of my sofa at the chance. I mean, online grocery shopping means I don’t have to get out of my car and someone does the shopping for me! Hallelujah.

And you can order days out, or the same day. So convenient.

Every step of the Walmart Online Grocery ordering process was a breeze – from ordering online, to pulling up to the parking lot and waiting just a couple of minutes to have my groceries loaded into my trunk for me. The convenience factor alone was enough to make this busy mama happy, but the fact that you can pick up more than just groceries – without ever actually having to go into a busy store to shop for them – at amazing Walmart prices, made me a convert. I was able to get all of our groceries, including fresh produce and meat, pumpkins (it’s fall, y’all!), toys, hair products, baby gear, home décor, pots and pans, planets, gifts, crafts, the list goes on and on.

If anything is missing, someone from the store will call you and ask if any alternatives will do. My local Walmart had run out of Diet Peach Snapple (anyone else addicted?), and my store rep felt so bad about not having what I wanted, he sent a half-dozen free roses after I had asked about what kinds of flowers they had available. How nice is that?

Pickup is super easy. At your designated time – that you choose – go to your store’s grocery pickup location. Your local store will call and text you 15 minutes before the start of your time slot and will text and send you a “thank you” e-mail after you’ve picked everything up. You simply wait in a spot and someone comes to you.

Oh, and did I mention the service is totally FREE? Someone shops for you for items at Walmart’s Same Every Day Low Prices, and then loads your car while you and your little one jam to Taylor Swift. I call that WINNING.

Want to be a #GroceryHero too? Head to Walmart’s Online Grocery site to see what stores are offering online grocery in your area. And the next time you order online, share your win by tagging @walmart with the hashtag, #GroceryHero and tag me –@glitterinclexi – so that I can send you a virtual high five! Happy online shopping!

What’s On Your Fall Bucket List? (Here’s Mine)

And just like that, today marks the first day of fall. It’s the season of apple cider, pumpkin patches, hayrides, and cozying up by the fire, and I couldn’t be more excited. So I’m pulling out my notepad, or in this case, blog post, and making a fall “to do” list.

What's On Your Fall Bucket List? (Here's Mine)

MY FALL BUCKET LIST:

  • Go to a Pumpkin Patch and buy enough great big pumpkins to line our brand new front porch steps. (Here’s last year’s visit.)
  • Go to our first apple orchard. (Check!)
  • Plan a picnic where we actually pack a yummy lunch, in a basket, and go somewhere beautiful.
  • Transition our home for the season. I’m breaking out the blankets, pinecones, scented candles (I’ve heard this scent is incredible!), and fall décor.
  • Go all out for Halloween this year.
  • Plan a movie-viewing party in our backyard. I’ve always wanted to do this, complete with a drop-down screen (i.e., a white sheet hung over our back deck) and I’m determined to try to make it happen this fall.
  • Find the perfect shade of vampy lipstick.
  • Serve spiked cider at a party. Always a huge hit.
  • Go for a walk with the family along the trail by our house and pick our favorite fall leaves to decorate our dining room table.
  • Learn to bake a few recipes I’ve had on my must-try list. (Plus, ALL of the pumpkin everything.)
  • Take a trip to the Farmers Market to check out all of the new things they have to offer for fall.
  • Get creatives with pumpkins. There are so many awesome pumpkin DIY’s out there and I’m definitely going to try out a few this season. (Remember these glitter-dipped pumpkins?)
  • Go through our closets and finally donate clothes hubby and I haven’t worn in more than a couple of years.
  • Plan a fall dinner party.
  • Take a staycation somewhere local, complete with hotel or Bed & Breakfast stay so that we really feel like we’re getting away.
  • Use our fireplace for the first time. (And toast marshmallows, naturally.)

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch

It’s no secret that I like TV. I like it a lot. (Here’s my list of must binge-watch shows, you know, just in case.) In truth, I only half-watch TV between hammering away at blog posts and long overdue emails, but the noise is oddly soothing. The real sign of a great show: if I actually stop typing. There are a few horror shows in this year’s lineup, along with a bit of time-travel and sci-fi, but those aren’t really my bag (yep, I’m a huge chicken), so I’m bringing you the comedies, romances, dramas, and scandalous soon-to-be-hits of this Fall’s 2016 lineup that I think we can all love.

THE NEW FALL SHOWS WORTH WATCHING …

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Better Things on FX

BETTER THINGS

A divorced actress tries to juggle her busy work schedule with the demands of being a single mother with three daughters, working in the entertainment industry, and hoping to enjoy some time with friends or time with herself. This one looks really funny, and it was created by Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon, so odds are, it will be.

When it’s on: Premieres Thursday September 8th on FX.

Mary + Jane on MTV

MARY + JANE

MTV just premiered its new pot-themed comedy, Mary + Jane, from writing/directing team and executive producers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (Can’t Hardly Wait). The show follows two drug dealers legal prescription delivery service owners as they attempt to build their business, find love and navigate the celebrity-filled world of Los Angeles. And it actually looks really cute.

When it’s on: Premieres September 5th, Mondays at 10pm on MTV. (You can watch the first episode here.)

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - This Is Us

THIS IS US

It’s fairly obvious that the goal here is to pull at America’s heartstrings with this one, and by the looks of it, it’s set to be a tearjerker. The first episode introduces a depressed TV star, an obese woman trying to lose weight, a successful corporate type looking for his father, and a couple expecting triplets — and closes by revealing the connection. It’s from the writer/directors of Crazy, Stupid, Love and Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia, so I’m giving it a chance.

When it’s on: Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 10 p.m. on NBC, then Tuesdays at 9 p.m. beginning Oct. 11

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - The Good Place

THE GOOD PLACE

This quirky comedy stars everyone’s favorite, Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, a woman, when she dies, who is mistaken for a saintly lawyer who helped save the lives of death row inmates, and is sent to “the good place” instead of “the bad place.” Instead of freaking out, Eleanor decides to be a person who actually could have made it into the good place on her own merits. Her snarky commentary is a bonus. The show is also created by Mike Schur, the man behind Parks & Recreation and Brooklyn Nine Nine. This has got to be good.

When it’s on: Thursdays at 8:30 pm. Premieres Monday, September 19 at 10/9c.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - No Tomorrow

NO TOMORROW

I’m sort of relieved that The CW is slowly trading in all of its sci-fi dramas for a few more romantic comedies, and No Tomorrow is the latest. On the heels of the success of the VERY offbeat Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which is amazing!), No Tomorrow‘s premise is just as bizarre: boy meets girl, boy believes the world is ending, boy and girl go on adventures together.

When it’s on: Premieres Tuesday, October 4th at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Notorious

NOTORIOUS

Written by Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman and blogger Allie Hagan (Suri’s Burn Book), Notorious is described as a provocative look at the interplay of criminal law and the media. It follows the professional and personal relationship between a charismatic attorney (Daniel Sunjata) and a powerhouse television producer (Piper Perabo) as they attempt to control the media, the justice system, and ultimately – each other. I’m intrigued.

When it’s on: Thursdays at 9pm on ABC. Starts September 22nd.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Divorce

DIVORCE

Sarah Jessica Parker (she’s back!) and Thomas Haden Church are a couple on the brink of divorce is this new HBO series. The tone is a witty blend of comedy and drama (and is actually created by Sharon Horgan of “Catastrophe” … which you MUST see.) I’m probably going to watch it just to see what SJP wears. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

When it’s on: Premieres October 9th at 10pm.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Bull on CBS

BULL

Inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw (who serves as an EP along with his son, Jay McGraw, and Steven Spielberg), the drama will follow the brash, brilliant and charming Dr. Bull (NCIS‘ Michael Weatherly) as he combines psychology, human intuition and high tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses and the accused tick.

When it’s on: Tuesdays at 9pm. Starts September 20th.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Time After Time

TIME AFTER TIME

unREAL’s Freddie Stroma and Revenge‘s Josh Bowman star as H.G. Wells and Jack the Ripper in this series, based on the novel and movie, from Kevin Williamson. In the cat and mouse adventure through time, famed science fiction writer H.G. Wells is transported to modern day Manhattan in pursuit of Jack the Ripper.

When it’s on: Coming Soon

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Pure Genius

PURE GENIUS

From Parenthood and Friday Night Lights‘ Jason Katims comes this medical drama will follow a young Silicon Valley tech titan (Augustus Prew), who recruits a veteran surgeon with a shady past (Dermot Mulroney) to start a cutting edge hospital, that takes a “new school” approach to medicine. I might just watch it for Dermot Mulroney.

When it’s on: The series is scheduled to premiere on October 27, 2016.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Great Indoors

GREAT INDOORS

Community and The Soup‘s Joel McHale stars as an adventure reporter who must adapt to the times when he becomes the boss to a group of milennials in the digital department of his magazine. I give this one a “maybe.”

When it’s on: The series is set to premiere on October 27, 2016, at 8:30 pm.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - American Housewife

AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE

Previously titled The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport, the comedy stars Mike & Molly‘s Katy Mixon (who, for the record, is nowhere near the “second fattest” anything) as Katie Otto, a confident, unapologetic and “plump” mother and wife, who moves her dysfunctional family to the wealthy town of Westport, Conn., which is filled with “perfect” families.

This one is making me cringe a little.

When it’s on: Tuesdays at 8:30pm on ABC. Starts October 11th.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Lethal Weapon

LETHAL WEAPON

Based on the movie, Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans star as the mismatched detectives who go on action-packed adventures. I’m torn about this one but I suspect hubby will at least want to to tune into the first few episodes.

When it’s on: Wednesdays at 8pm on FOX. Starts September 21st.

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - STILL STAR-CROSSED

STILL STAR-CROSSED

ABC has picked up yet another series produced by Shonda Rhimes, and this one will definitely be of interest to Shakespeare fans. The series picks up where the famous story of Romeo and Juliet ends, charting the treachery, palace intrigue and ill-fated romances of the Montagues and Capulets in the wake of the young lovers’ tragic fate. Essentially, where Romeo and Juliet’s tragic love story ends, another, even greater story begins. The show is based on the book, Still Star-Crossed by Melinda Taub. (For the record: I LOVED the book, so I have my fingers crossed.)

When it’s on: Coming Soon

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Riverdale on the CW

RIVERDALE

Another highly anticipated CW show, Riverdale is based on the Archie Comics characters. The series finds Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Josie trying to navigate life in their small town, which is not as wholesome as it seems.

When it’s on: Midseason

Press Record: The New Fall 2016 Shows to Watch - Powerless on NBC

POWERLESS

The DC Comics workplace comedy focuses on insurance adjusters who look out for the regular people who have to cover the damage caused by superheroes. I love Vanessa Hudgens, who takes a starring role in the show, so I’ll probably tune in.

When it’s on: Midseason

What new shows are you most looking forward to?

Happy Birthday To Me!

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos

It’s my birthday and I’ll eat ice cream if I want to. Seriously, I’m thinking about going on an ice cream tour of our town today in honor of my big day. I mean, I did take a yoga class yesterday; the two have to cancel each other out, right?

Hubby has to work, so it’s just me and my mini me for most of the day. In all likelihood, we’ll just spend too much money online (hello adorable coffee tumbler, rockstar leggings, and perfect new fall leopard flats) and watch girly movies (my picks: Clueless, Dirty Dancing, and Love Actually; her picks: Frozen, then Frozen, and Frozen. Odds are, she’ll win.)

Tonight we’ll attempt to find good sushi in the Triangle. Anyone have a favorite sushi place in Durham or Chapel Hill? I’m starting to suffer withdrawals.

Also, thank you so much for all of the kind words, tweets, messages, and e-mails about yesterday’s post. It’s so nice to get that encouragement and to hear that I’m not alone. Hope you’re having a happy Thursday!

End-of-Summer Bucket List

This post was sponsored by thinkThin®. Thank you so much for supporting the sponsors that make Glitter, Inc. possible!

As summer is winding down, I’ve been trying to focus on a few fun summer bucket list things before Scarlett starts school, like running through the sprinklers, covering our sidewalks in chalk, taking a road trip, having a picnic, and hitting the books in the sunshine; basically, getting outside more while the warm weather lasts. With the help of thinkThin®, I’m working on trying a few summer “guiltless pleasures.”

End-of-Summer Bucket List with the Family

Plus, I’m a busy working mom, so having snacks that fit in with our crazy schedule are necessary. Gluten-free thinkThin® High Protein Bars are full of protein and come in a variety of decadent flavors, making them the perfect guilt-free pick me up. I’m partial to the Brownie Crunch bars because I’m admittedly a total chocaholic. Even on the busiest of days, having a thinkThin® bar in my purse is a lifesaver. (Psst … If you’re a fellow busy lady, check out The Busy Girl’s Guide to Guilt-Free Snacking.)

Now that we’ve moved into our new neighborhood, we’ve been taking family walks to explore and get outside. We have this amazing trail just a few blocks from our house, and Scarlett is loving all there is to see. We collect rocks and flowers and she calls out to all of the trees and birds. If you follow along on Snapchat, you’ve probably already seen a few of our outdoor adventures. It’s pretty adorable.

We also have a foolproof trick for taking longer walks: bubbles.

We’re Headed to Maine on a Family Vacation

DVF Luggage for Travel - Vacation Style

I am SO excited because today we’re flying to Boston and then to Maine to spend time with family! It’s crazy how much you miss family once you’ve moved to a new state. Unfortunately, hubby has to stay back and work, so Scarlett and I will be flying just the two of us. We’ll meet my family in Boston, but on the flight from Durham to Boston, it’s just us girls. I have a few jitters about what flying will be like with her now that she’s a fully mobile, talking, busy toddler, but I’ve packed every game, toy, and snack that I can think of, and I’m hoping for the best. The real trick is getting her to stay in her seat. She’s officially two, so we had to pay for her own seat on the plane (#bummer), and because it’s just the two of us I’m opting to skip the carseat; we have one in Maine, and I just couldn’t fathom pushing a stroller to the gate while dragging a carry-on bag, diaper bag, and carseat, all while negotiating with a toddler to stay put. I ordered this nifty little contraption on Amazon after hearing so many great things about it, and again, totally hoping for the best. Tell me I’m not crazy?

I’ll still be tuning in plenty over here on the blog, and particularly on social media. Follow along on instagramfacebooktwitter, and snapchat → glitterinclexi (lots of adorable behind-the-scenes there). And prepare yourselves for picture overload.

Now tell me: any fun end-of-summer plans? If you’re headed somewhere new, I want to hear where you’re traveling to? And if you’re staying put, promise me you’ll pour yourself a cocktail and enjoy these last weeks of summer like a champ.
