Like most kids, our girls LOVE sugar cookies. And because our oldest daughter can’t have any dairy, we’re always experimenting with dairy free versions of our favorite desserts. We’ve made a whole lot of dairy free sugar cookies over the years because sugar cookies are a real fan favorite; including the best sugar cookies for decorating, soft and chewy dairy free sugar cookies, dairy free Lofthouse cookies (a.k.a., pillowy soft frosted sugar cookies), even dairy free Lucky Charms sugar cookies.

Super Soft Dairy Free Sprinkle Sugar Cookies

Our most recent baking quest was to find a super soft sugar cookie that couple stand up to a whole lot of sprinkles, while still staying super soft, moist, and perfectly chewy on the outside. And goodness did we ever find it! These sprinkle sugar cookies are pillowy soft, perfectly sweet, and pack a whole lot of colorful sprinkles

Aside from being delicious and perfectly nostalgic, I love sprinkles because you can change up the colors depending on the season or holiday you’re celebrating. Yep, sprinkle cookies are brilliantly customizable. For instance, want to make Christmas sprinkle cookies? Switch it up and make these sprinkle cookies with red and green sprinkles. Halloween = orange and black sprinkles. Hanukkah = blue and white sprinkles. Valentine’s Day = pink and red sprinkles. The list goes on and on.

And of course, kids and grownups alike adore sprinkle cookies. I mean, what’s not to love?

Cookies Sprinkles and Toppings

We fold our sprinkles right into the dough, but you could easily roll your dough balls in sprinkles for a perfectly coated sprinkle cookie.

Mom truth: any time I top our cookies with sprinkles or something like chocolate chips, our kids just nibble off the toppings. Anyone else’s kids eat like little gerbils when toppings are involved? 😆

If sprinkles aren’t your thing, or you’re just looking for a delicious, classic sugar cookie recipe, the sprinkles in these can easily be omitted.

You can skip the sprinkles altogether – or roll the plain sugar cookie dough in a bit of sugar before baking – and just make seriously amazing sugar cookies. More details on that in the recipe below!

As far as my kids are concerned though, sprinkles make the world go round!

Plus, adding in sprinkles makes these sugar cookies extra special for holidays and celebrations.

Super Soft Dairy Free Sprinkle Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup vegetable shortening (vegan butter or regular butter - if not dairy free - works too!)
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup sprinkles OR extra sugar, for rolling dough in*

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350˚F and line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and set that bowl aside.
3. In a large bowl with an electric mixer (or the bowl of your electric stand mixer), cream together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy – this typically takes about one minute.
4. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
5. Slowly add in the flour mixture, mixing with the electric mixer to combine. Scrape down the sides as needed to be sure everything is combined.
6. For sprinkle cookies, once everything is combined, add in your sprinkles and give the dough one last stir to be sure all of the sprinkles are mixed in.
7. Using a small cookie scoop, form dough into balls. Place dough balls on cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. (We fit 12 cookie balls per cookie sheet.)
8. Bake for 10 – 11 minutes. Cookies will spread a bit and the tops will begin to crack. Don’t overcook. Remove the tray from the oven and allow the cookies to rest for 5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Notes

*These cookies can easily be made as classic sugar cookies by skipping the sprinkles altogether and rolling each cookie dough ball into a bit of sugar. We actually split the batch and made half rolled in sugar and half filled with sprinkles. Both versions are delicious!
