There are so many great sugar cookie recipes out there, but an incredible DAIRY FREE sugar cookie; that’s harder to come by. I’ve tried several dairy free and vegan cookie recipes over the years, and though we’ve had a few decent attempts, I’ve never been completely satisfied with the end result. Many vegan and dairy free sugar cookies are too hard or crisp, not quite sweet enough, and just missing that WOW factor that a truly great bakery style sugar cookie has.
Until now.
I’ve found THE ONE. The dairy free sugar cookie recipe that is officially our family’s favorite sugar cookie.
And they are so incredibly yummy. Sooooooooooo yummy!
I’ve now made these soft and chewy dairy free sugar cookies three times, and each time I make these, they come out just perfect. In addition, they work as a totally vegan sugar cookie. (I mean, how great is it to find a recipe that turns out just right every single time?)
These dairy free sugar cookies are soft and pillowy, thick and chewy, with crisp edges.
Rolling the dough in granulated sugar adds the perfect crisp, delicately sweet texture to the outside, and goodness are these cookies incredible.
How to Make Soft and Chewy Dairy Free Sugar Cookies
These cookies are also unbelievably EASY to make You mix them up in one bowl, no chilling required. And the end result is cookie perfection every single time.
You’ll start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and lining two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
Next, in a large bowl, cream together the vegan butter (Earth Balance is by far our favorite vegan butter for baking) and sugar for about 1-2 minutes using a handheld mixer, stand mixer, or a wooden spoon. Mix in the egg (*or flax egg) and vanilla, scraping the sides with a spatula as needed to be sure everything is well incorporated. Set aside.
In a medium sized bowl, add the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt and whisk to combine.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and then add the vinegar (or cream of tartar). Stir all ingredients to combine. The dough will be quite thick and not too wet; that’s perfect.
Roll the dough into cookie balls, about 2 tablespoons of dough per ball. (You can also use a cookie scoop to get even dough balls and then just roll them each in your hands a bit to make the balls.) Repeat, and roll the balls in the sugar topping. Place sugar coated dough balls on parchment-lined baking sheets.
Bake one sheet at a time in the pre-heated oven for 11 minutes.
The cookies will be very soft straight out of the oven. So allow them to cool for about 10 minutes on the cookie sheet and then transfer to a wire cooling rack. Repeat with the second sheet while the first sheet of cookies is cooling.
*To make these sugar cookies vegan, replace the egg with a flax egg.
To make a flax egg, in a separate bowl, mix together 1 tablespoons ground flaxseed and 2.5 tablespoons water and set aside to thicken before adding it to your mixture.
Cookies will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container (we have and love airtight cookie jar) at room temperature or stored in the refrigerator.
