With baby number two on the way, lately, I can’t help but dream up baby shower ideas and nursery layouts. So, to satisfy my love for parties, I decided to throw a little tea party baby shower as inspiration!
I’m showing you just how to create your own baby shower in 6 easy steps, with the help of some favorite tried-and-true baby shower games and memorable traditions and one towering DIY Diaper “Cupcake” Cake Tower, all of which you can easily DIY.
I’ve always loved a great tea party – though I’ve never actually thrown one for the blog. This felt like the perfect opportunity! I love that a tea party feels feminine, vintage, and truly like a special and unique party. I mean, it’s not every day you get invited to a tea party!
Unless of course, you have a three-year-old. We have a lot of tea parties.
And yes, I’ve always been a total sucker for a great tea party; long before I had a sidekick to play tea with me. I love the delicate tea cups (that I can’t help but collect from vintage shops, yard sales, etc.), the delicious teas and desserts that always remind me of my semester at Cambridge in England, the chance to dress-up and play pretend. (I mean, tea is fit for royalty, after all!)

How to Throw a Tea Party Baby Shower in 6 Easy Steps:

| 1 | Create a statement piece.
For Scarlett’s baby shower a few years back, one of our family friends made me the most amazing towering diaper cake, and I’ve been dreaming of ways to create something similar. A diaper cake really is one of the most classic, standout baby shower decorations; plus, the end result – a whole lot of diapers – is really useful for any new parent!
This tea party baby shower gave me the perfect inspiration. I wanted to take the diaper cake trend in a slightly different direction, and thus, the Pampers diaper cupcake tower was born.
How to Make a DIY Diaper “Cupcake” Cake:
To make your diaper “cupcakes” all you have to do is fold the diapers in half, vertically, and then tightly roll into a “cupcake.” Secure your “cupcake” with a clear elastic hair tie.
I filled a tiered cupcake stand and paper cupcake liners to truly look like a tower of cupcakes, and then decorated the whole thing with flowers to fit in with our tea party baby shower theme. Keep the flowers more neutral for a gender neutral diaper cake.
Side note: I’m about six-and-a-half months pregnant with baby number two (our announcement, how I told my husband we were pregnant again, and gender reveal), and as I was opening the Pampers Swaddlers box and putting together the diaper cupcake tower, I couldn’t help but get all misty-eyed. I forgot how tiny newborn and size 1 diapers are (and Scarlett actually wore preemie for the first month or so!) Those itty bitty diapers, their sweet baby smell, just rolling the same tiny diapers Scarlett once wore, turned me into a weepy mess. Time flies when you’re having fun!
| 2 | Include details that really get everyone in the spirit.
If you’re throwing a tea party or bohemian baby shower, have everyone wear or provide flower crowns or floppy hats. Everyone will get a kick out of the added flair, but sticking to something like a hat or floral crown keeps it from feeling like guests have to go to all the trouble of “dressing up.” Plus, you’ll get so many great pictures when guests are having fun sporting their girly props. Flower crowns can even double as super baby shower favors!
| 3 | Games are always popular at baby showers, but keep them simple and enjoyable for your guests.
A few favorite baby shower games:
Hold a diaper raffle. Instead of buying tickets, tell guests they can enter the raffle by bringing a pack of diapers. (Be sure to mention the diaper raffle on the invitation so that everyone knows to bring diapers.) For every guest that brings a box of diapers, throw their name into a hat, and towards the end of the shower, pull one or two names out of the hat and announce them the winner(s). By the way, a gift card is always a great prize/motivator! And the very best part about a diaper raffle: new mom and babe get a whole stockpile of diapers for those first few months.
A diaper bag full of baby items. Put at least ten popular/useful baby items inside a diaper bag; i.e., a bib, bottle, teething ring, rattle, and diaper. Give each guest a pen and paper before passing the diaper bag around. Without looking, each person should stick a hand inside the bag and identify as many items as possible. Give each guest no more than two minutes to feel around and make their guesses before passing the diaper bag to the next person. Once everyone has had a turn, find out who had the most correct answers. The winner gets a prize and the mom-to-be gets the diaper bag filled with baby essentials!
“My water broke” ice cubes. The night before the shower, make these adorable baby ice cubes. Then, at the start of the shower, everyone puts one of the baby-filled ice cubes in their drink. Whoever’s melts first, yells, “My water broke!” and that person is crowned the winner! This simple and quick game always brings out the laughs.
| 4 | Plan a menu that’s unique and fun.
Tea sandwiches and plenty of dessert are the way to go for a tea party shower. You could even have a signature soup or salad to pair with the finger foods.
| 5 | Carry the details throughout the party.
Here, real and fabric roses adorned the diaper cupcake “cake,” the tea cups, the napkin rings, rose petals were even scattered across the tables.
| 6 | If you decide to have a party favor, give guests something they’ll love and remember.
When my mom planned my baby shower for Scarlett, she and I spent months, scouring yard sales and thrift shops for old tea cups and saucers. If you really keep your eyes peeled, and you’re a fan of thrifting, you can find vintage tea cups for as little as twenty cents a piece. Guests were thrilled to take home such a memorable keepsake, and so many of them still use their teacups to this day.
