Make these DIY Cardboard Construction Paper Flower Pots with your kids using things you most likely have at home. The best part: this adorable kids craft doubles as the perfect Mother’s Day gift!
With Spring here and Mother’s Day right around the corner, the kids and I have been looking for crafts to do to celebrate the season. I stumbled upon this adorable Cardboard Construction Paper Flower Pot on @mythreewonders Instagram (she shares the most adorable kid-friendly crafts and projects!) and I knew I would want to recreate the craft with our girls.
For starters, anything with flowers gets an A+ in my book. And, this kids craft is not only easy and fun to make, but once you’ve created your popsicle stick flowers, the kids can arrange and rearrange their flowers by sliding them in and out of the top of their flower post again and again. Who doesn’t love an adorably interactive DIY?
The Perfect Mother’s Day Craft for Kids
Not only is this Cardboard construction paper flower pot something you can make at home with materials you most likely already have at home, the sweet craft doubles as a perfect Mother’s Day gift!
We have our girls’ flower pots displayed on a shelf and I love looking up at the sweet flowers our kiddos made.
DIY Cardboard Construction Paper Flower Pots
Our kids are 2 and 5 years old so I did more of the construction paper cutting and hot gluing, especially for our toddler, but the girls loved decorating their flowers using crayons and sparkly gem stickers and we’re already planning to make watercolor flowers next by painting white card stock paper flowers with watercolor paint.
To make our own cardboard flower pots, we were able to find everything we needed right at home. We used things like colored construction paper, cardboard (from a cardboard box), popsicle sticks, a hot glue gun and hot glue sticks, and stickers and crayons to decorate our flowers.
If you don’t have a hot glue gun, craft glue will work as well, just be sure to press and seal the brown construction paper to the cardboard or card stock well and allow it to dry completely.
If you plan on crafting a lot with your kids, this little glue gun is THE BEST. I’ve had mine (in pink) for years and years and years and it just keeps on chugging.
If you don’t have popsicle sticks, glue your construction paper flowers to the back of plastic spoons or plastic butter knives or collect thin sticks from outside and make more natural looking flower stems by gluing your construction paper flowers to sticks.
Our kids were SO excited to make these DIY cardboard construction paper flower pots and they were especially thrilled about the final product!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- colored construction paper
- cardboard or card stock
- popsicle sticks
- hot glue gun and hot glue sticks (craft glue will work as well, just allow it to dry completely)
- stickers and crayons (optional)
HOW TO MAKE CARDBOARD CONSTRUCTION PAPER FLOWER POTS
- You’ll start by cutting a flower pot shape out of a piece of cardboard or card stock paper. I used a pencil to trace a “flower pot” shape and then cut it out with scissors. (It doesn’t need to be perfect!)
- Using the cardboard or card stock flower pot as a template, trace the same shape onto a piece of brown construction paper and cut that flower pot shape out as well.
- Using your hot glue gun, add a line of glue around the inside rim of your cardboard or card stock template along three sides: the left and right sides of teh pot and the bottom. You can also place a line of glue about two to three inches down from the top/rim of the flower pot template. Then affix your brown constuction paper to that. You want the bottom and sides to be glued shut, leaving the top open so that you can insert your popsicle stick flowers. (I found that adding a line of glue about two to three inches down from the top opening kept my popsicle stick flowers from sliding all the way into the pot.)
- Next, make your popsicle stick flowers. Cut flower shapes from colored construction paper. (Again, your flowers do not have to ber anywhere near perfect.)
- Optional: let your kids decorate their paper flowers using stickers, glitter, crayons, markers, etc.
- Once the paper flowers are ready, put a dot of glue on the tip of a popsicle stick and affix your paper flower. You can also cut out a small circle from a different color construction paper to glue to the center of your paper flower, making the center of each flower. Repeat this process for each flower making several popsicle stick flowers.
- Once everything is dry, let your kids arrange their popsicle stick flowers in their flower pots! Enjoy!
