One of my favorite simple first day back-to-school traditions is to have a little after school party; a.k.a. dinner with adorable party decorations to commemorate the special occasion.

We all know that I live for any excuse to throw a party, and celebrating the first day of school is such a sweet way to make the big first day of school extra special for your kids.
I love the idea of a celebratory breakfast the morning of the first day of school (and kudos to families having a full-blown breakfast on school mornings!), but we’re a blur of chaos on weekday mornings, so trying to squeeze in a sit-down decorated breakfast just wasn’t happening.

We did manage to throw an adorable first day of school donut breakfast, in case you’re looking for first day of school breakfast inspiration; though admittedly, it helped that at the time we only had one daughter in school and it was remote learning. 🙈🤣
A Note on Easy First Day of School Traditions
The key to successful first day of school traditions is to keep it simple! I’ve taken photos of our girls on the first day of school holding a cute sign (that I can easily put together or print out the night before) and we do this celebratory back-to-school party for dinner each year; both of which are relatively easy for me to pull together.
First night of school pizza party? Perfect! Box of donuts just after school on the first day? Awesome! Even having everything you’ll need to make first day of school ice cream sundaes is such a winning way to celebrate the special first day for your kids.
For us, it’s typically takeout, cute plates and decorations, a few balloons, and the sweetest conversation as our little ones recount all of the details from their first day of school around the decorated dining room table.
