I have worn the color black as a neutral nail polish for years. I actually wear black nail polish almost exclusively (with a bit of red, maroon, nude, and glitter mixed in to my manicure repertoire here and there.) Don’t get me wrong: sometimes it’s fun to paint your nails in more festive colors for holidays (think baby pink for Spring-time holidays, bright red around Christmas, etc.), but black is the nail polish color I keep on coming back to.
I suspect black nail polish took on the edgy, witch-like feel thanks to Morticia Adams (style icon), and then it got the goth punk connotation some time in the 90s, but ever since, fashion girls around the globe have latched onto the shade for it’s sleek, goes-with-anything look, and have brought it to major chic girl status. Think about it: black is sexy, it’s way more versatile than just about every other color – i.e., it goes with everything (except perhaps for nudes – which has a similar effect – but black packs way more punch), and is actually surprisingly wearable. I find myself feeling edgier, cooler, more polished, whenever I wear black nail polish. And nail polish really is such a simple thing. It’s inexpensive and can make a look so much more luxe and put-together. I’m telling you, black nail polish is the way to go.
Over the years I’ve tried a lot of black nail polish – some are winners, and some are just meh. My favorites include the classic Essie in Licorice, Chanel in Black Satin (so luxe!), Butter London Union Jack Black Nail Lacquer, and my new favorite: Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Nail Polish in Blacky O (for black nail polish with a bit more staying power be sure to use the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Nail Polish Top Coat; a.k.a., how to avoid the truly goth chipped-black-nail look.)
I love a black-as-black hue, but if you’re not quite ready to take the leap, deep purples and blood reds like O.P.I.’s Lincoln Park After Dark and Essie’s Wicked, with almost-black undertones, are a great start.
Loooove black nail polish! It definitely has that cool, edgy vibe to it–and matches basically all of my clothes effortlessly, which is a win in my book!

I love black nail polish too! It’s definitely in my rotation.
OMG! I am obsessed with black nail polish or colors very close to black. Just got a fresh dark green manicure today. My friends are laughing because it still looks black. I’m right there with you Lexi!

Oooh, love navy too!
I tried black nail polish for the first time ever last week and really liked it! I was hesitant to try it because me + black makes me feel kind of like a poseur (I wear too much color) but it looked good, and it went with all my outfits!

Yay! I love hearing that! It really does go with everything!
