You don’t need a curling iron to get perfect big, bouncy waves you’ll love. A flat iron or straightener can actually give you those gorgeous, natural-looking waves every time, without ever needing to break out another hair tool!
I’m teaming up with TRESemmé to show you how to get an effortless curl utilizing their new hot tools at Walmart. This post has been sponsored by TRESemmé. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #TRESItUp
I don’t know about you but as a busy mom, I’m all about easy hairstyles that I can achieve without a whole lot of steps or tools. A few years back, my hairstylist taught me how to create gorgeous, bouncy, super soft waves with a flat iron, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Because my hair is so long, I get big, full waves with a lot of bounce, though you can easily create big, soft curls with a flat iron by using a tighter curl and starting a bit closer to the root. I’m obsessed with creating waves (or curls) with my flat iron because I can skip the second tool (i.e., a curling iron or wand) and just straighten and then wave/curl all with the same hot tool.
Once you get the hang of creating curls with a flat iron, you’ll find it’s actually REALLY easy to do.
For me at least, the very best part of a flat iron curl is that the wave or curl you create doesn’t have to be perfect. I adore the fact that a flat iron curl is going to look really natural, and because you’re sealing the style with your flat iron, each wave looks really glossy and gorgeous. My flat iron curls also last just as well as a curling iron curl, and because I have frizz-prone hair, the hair iron actually helps to seal and keep my hair from frizzing. Basically, my flat iron gives me pretty effortless, big, and beautiful waves for any occasion.
To share exactly how I get easy super soft waves with a flat iron, I had the help of TRESemmé and their new Thermal Creations products. The TRESemmé Thermal Creations Ultra Power Hair Dryer, TRESemmé Thermal Creations 1″ Ceramic Flat Iron, TRESemmé Thermal Creations Blow Dry Balm, TRESemmé Thermal Creations Blow Dry Accelerator, and TRESemmé Thermal Creations Flat Iron Spray to be exact.
I’m pretty smitten with the TRESemmé Thermal Creations line of products. The TRESemmé Blow Dry Balm, Blow Dry Accelerator, and Flat Iron Spray all smell AMAZING, and the TRESemmé Ultra Power Hair Dryer is lightweight, powerful, and surprisingly quiet. I spray my whole head with a few sprays of the TRESemmé Blow Dry Accelerator and then dry my hair with the TRESemmé Ultra Power Hair Dryer before any styling. That seems to not only leave my hair smelling incredible all day but the style holds for days after that. All of the TRESemmé Thermal Creations products are new, currently exclusive to Walmart and can be found in the styling tools aisle.
How to Get Easy Super Soft Waves With a Flat Iron
Step 1:
Spray your hair with a good heat protectant spray or balm like TRESemmé Blow Dry Balm, Blow Dry Accelerator, or Flat Iron Spray.
Step 2:
Do a rough blow dry of your hair using the TRESemmé Ultra Power Hair Dryer, being sure to dry your hair well from root to tip. (It doesn’t have to be perfect, just dry!)
Step 3:
Once your hair is dry, work in sections and divide your hair about a 1/3 at a time, starting from the base of your head.
Step 4:
Be sure your TRESemmé Thermal Creations Flat Iron is hot. (About 400 degrees F.) Flat iron one section at a time. Repeat until all of your hair has been ironed. I like to iron for an extra second or two on the ends because I think straighter ends help to create more of that “wave” look rather than a “curl.”
Step 5:
Once your hair is relatively straight, separate your hair into sections once again.
Step 6:
Start with the bottom section, and working in roughly 1/2 inch sections, clamp the section of hair about halfway through the strand and turn the flat iron one-and-a-half turns in the direction you want your curl.
Pull the flat iron through the strand while maintaining tension on the end.
Twist and/or hold the curl for a few seconds after you’ve run the curling iron through to allow the curl to cool and set.
Repeat on small sections of hair until it’s all curled. You’ll get the hang of it and find it’s actually a quick way to curl hair.
Don’t stress too much about the direction of your curls. The key to natural-looking curls, and a bit of volume, is to have curls going in different directions.
Step 7:
Spray lightly with hairspray to set.
Voilà!
NOTE: I like to allow my curls to cool and set completely before I play with the curls or try to tousle them a bit with my fingers. I have pretty long/heavy hair, so I find it best to just leave the curls alone for the most part; they always end up falling into a pretty curl/wave as time goes on.
