For whatever reason, I have been a major procrastinator this holiday season. I’ve had so much to do, so little time, and I’m kind of running out of excuses. (Thank goodness for next week’s vacation!) Decorating your home for the holidays is definitely a highlight of every winter season. And guess what? Decorating doesn’t have to be all that complicated, or time-consuming. But it should be fun! There are so many great touches that add a whole lot of holiday spirit to your home’s décor, and will have you living in a holiday wonderland through the season.
- Choose a color story: when holiday decorating, stick to a palette of two or three colors – it will make decorating easy and your home will look perfectly put together. (Don’t be afraid to venture out from the holiday norm; why not try fuchsia, teal, and silver, or decorate everything in a madras or plaid pattern?)
- Run a string, a piece of twine, or a long thin branch over a fireplace or mantle (though really, anywhere works), and use clothespins to hang holiday cards or Christmas stockings. (I’m also a big fan of these Anthropologie Twinkle Lights.)
- Place jars of marshmallows, old-fashioned stick candies, and candy canes on your bar cart or kitchen counter (you get your sugar rush and a cute decoration!)
- Tie some of your favorite ornaments (that might otherwise get lost in your tree) along a staircase banister. Thread them with different lengths of thin ribbon or string, then tie them to a long, wide grosgrain ribbon (like this Etoile Velvet Ribbon) and wind around the banister.
- And if you don’t have a staircase, make an ornament chandelier. String each ornament with ribbon and hang them in a cluster.
- Decorate your walls and above the door with garlands and tassels. The bright-colored paper goes a long way in making your home feel extra festive.
- Hang multiple wreaths in front of a window that lets in a lot of light. Use red silk ribbon to hang the wreaths so that they pop against the light. (Loving this Target Smith & Hawken™ Curled Wood Wreath in Red.)
- For an inexpensive wintry centerpiece, fill glass vases and large jars of different heights with pinecones (like these Pottery Barn Mini Gold Pinecones Vase Filler) and tall berry-covered branches (or these West Elm Branch Lights). Spray-paint the pinecones and branches gold and silver for an extra dose of glam.
- Dress up your couch and/or your bedroom, by throwing holiday pillows and wool blankets and throws on them. Nothing warms up a room like a few new wintry throw pillows and cozy blankets. (I’m in love with this Anthropologie Luminous Dots Pillow and this Anthropologie Faux Fur Pillow.)
- Light lots of candles. Arrange clusters of candles around buffet areas, the bar, and on side and end tables. It will make your atmosphere incredibly cozy. (Try these West Elm Mercury Tealight Holders.)
