So far, at nearly twenty weeks pregnant, I have rallied against maternity wear. In fact, I only stepped foot into my first maternity store this past weekend to take a look around, and when I told the sales girl that this was my first visit at five months pregnant, she seemed genuinely shocked that I waited so long. But I am holding out as long as I possibly can. Thankfully, there are cuter maternity styles out there nowadays, but it’s tough to find well fitting and stylish maternity clothes, and I tend to swear by looser shapes anyhow. So far, I’ve been shopping stores like Macy’s and online retailer, Shopbop, for comfier staples (Harem pants are my favorite!), but I’ve found really beautiful and breezy non-maternity pieces at stores like Free People and Anthropologie. For instance, this bump-friendly Free People pleated swing tank is a breeze and should take me through most of my pregnancy (and it’s on sale!) Second place goes to this gauzy Free People trapeze dress – perfect for Spring and Summer. And these silk cinched trousers from Anthropologie, on sale, are the bomb-dot-com.
As a general rule – look for tops and dresses that have some swing or give, plus a longer length, because as that bump grows, a shorter-length hem just won’t cut it. And truth be told: the one clothing item I finally had to cave on: maternity jeans (more on that later).
So without further ado, the non-maternity {maternity} line-up: a-line and tent dresses, maxi dresses, tops and dresses with a bit of flare, peplum, and stretch – these are my new best friends. We’ll talk denim, harem pants and trousers with an elastic waistband, later.

For all of the mommies out there, what are your go-to non-maternity bump-friendly picks?

Loving everything that you picked. I 100% agree with you when it comes to maternity clothes. I honestly loath them & the idea of them. Minus maternity jeans, of course! Maternity jeans may be the most comfortable jeans I have ever worn. EVERYONE should own a pair (pregnant or not)! And I love that all of my favorite denim brands make them. I have decided to try and go my entire pregnancy without succumbing to maternity. Wish me luck! I will be posting my finds as well. =)

Congratulations! This is a great post about maternity/non-maternity style. I was just having a conversation with a friend who is expecting and she hasn’t taken the plunge yet for maternity wear (5 months). Anywho, her strategy given the weather are leggings with loose tops and fab over the knee boots. For warmer weather, knit or stretch shift dresses. All I can say is, thank goodness for maxi dresses in the summer ! Would love to see your creative ideas to stay stylish thru pregnancy. xo-Elaine
