While in New York back in September, I spoke to so many New Yorkers who swore by … Brooklyn. Then last week I posted a look at Jenna Lyons’ former Park Slope residence, and so many of you confessed that Brooklyn was where it’s at. This VOGUE article, Bonjour, Brooklyn: Why New Yorkers Are Flocking to the Borough, really got me thinking.
Hubby and I make the big move to who-knows-where in about a year and a half. (He’ll match for residency, and off we’ll go). We always knew we’d look at residency programs in the Northeast, and as he goes through each rotation, we talk about the possibilities and try to picture ourselves in all these different cities. (Truthfully, it’s become my favorite game!) We both love city-living, and we’re excited for the change (less excited for the snow).
New York has always been at the very top of my list. Part of me kicks my less-adventurous 21-year old self for not high-tailing it to the Big Apple just after college. But over the years, New York City has scared me more and more. As I’ve grown up, I’ve accumulated stuff, and a budget, and anxiety. (Thank you very much, responsibility). I can’t imagine moving into an 8×8 closet, letting go of all of our precious space, spending nearly double what we spend here in Miami for a fantastic apartment, and getting caught up in the crazy hustle bustle that is “the city”. Basically, I’m terrified. But then I hear Brooklyn is awesome, and I’m thinking, sign me up. Am I crazy?

I’ve been seeing similar things to this a LOT lately-it’s like so many people are suddenly starting to realize there is life outside of Manhattan, and it’s pretty great. Please don’t forget there’s life outside Brooklyn, too-Queens is incredibly underrated (and yes, I live there). It’s a 5-20 minute subway ride to the city depending how far out you live-often even easier than Brooklyn to get in to the city-and even cheaper than BK! Long Island City is already being termed “the New Brooklyn” with constant warehouse renovation and high rises being built on the waterfront. Several bloggers I’ve come across in the past few weeks have talked about “venturing outside the city” to Brooklyn…but the city is so, so, so much more than Manhattan. Park Slope is a great neighborhood-and so is Boerum Hill, Greenpoint (a little yuppie, though), and even parts of Bushwick. Don’t forget Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Cobble Hill and Fort Greene, too! Both Queens and Brooklyn have great vintage shops, markets and art spots.
But in all seriousness-if you want to move to NYC, do it now. I had to do it, because I didn’t want to be 45 with children graduating, telling me that they wanted to move to NYC and me saying “I said that once, too.” I want to be able to say I DID that-and maybe I’ll even still be here 🙂 (who knows if the kids part will actually happen, not really my style, haha).

It is exciting thinking about where you will end up- one of the things I loved about Army life. I was born and raised in Brooklyn- but it was not cool then, well, to me it was but to no one outside our world, lol. I love city living and miss it, but I agree on the space issue- it would take some major downsizing to fit in a place (and my shoes have to come!)

Haha I love your title. I honestly have not spent any time in Brooklyn but I have friends that live there and LOVE it. I def. think it’s the cool spot to be. I mean, if Vogue is covering it, obvi it’s THE hip place 😉 xo

genius title! I definitely think Brooklyn is where it’s at! I lived in NYC for nearly 6 years, and my latter 2 were spent in brooklyn and I must say it was amazing. new restaurants and shops were always opening up, neighbors were getting hipper, and ofcourse, rent was skyrocketing.

I absolutely love this. As a native New Yorker, my love of Manhattan and my recent adoration with Brooklyn has been an emotional tug of war. Lease is up in April and Williamsburg is calling my name…

heaven! I look brooklyn! I don’t live there but every time I visit I find something new and amazing!
As a native I’ll say Brooklyn’s great if you wan’t the best of everything 24/7 but it is a very LOUD place to live. Queens would be a better option if you desire more trees and peace and quiet. Once you get used to the intensity that is NYC, it is a cool place to be.
