I wasn’t expecting to love these books. But I did. My sister read the series and immediately told me about them, long before they were made into the hugely popular Blockbuster movies that they are today. I devoured the series, reading them any chance I could get. Basically, the nation of Panem is the fictional location (formerly North America). In those ruins, is the thriving Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts; each district worse than the one before it. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games,” a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. The series is fairly epic, sweeping over the course of many years and Hunger Games. The characters are so well-written, and you’ll actually long for that depth when watching the movies. Also, Suzanne Collins imagination is unparalleled (think Harry Potter; but much darker.)
