A Modern Manhattan Apartment with a Key to Gramercy Park

Actress Uma Thurman’s Manhattan apartment (a sort of “duplex” created by combining two apartments in the building) has been listed on StreetEasy, giving us a rare glimpse into her stunning home. And even if potential buyers aren’t wowed by the stunning apartment itself, it has perhaps one of the most coveted apartment features for New Yorkers: a key to the private Gramercy Park.

The apartment, built in 1910, wraps around two corners of the building and the interior was redesigned by architect Paul Scott specially for Uma. There’s a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, a tin ceiling in the kitchen, original herringbone oak floors (swoon!), and ten-foot ceilings throughout the residence. On the main floor there’s a renovated modern kitchen with a walnut counter, eat-in breakfast bar, and copper sink, a large dining room with a terrace overlooking the park, a master suite bedroom and second master, plus three more bedrooms, there’s even a gorgeous tiled Turkish steam bath.

The apartment boasts two master bedrooms (in case one just isn’t enough.)

And the bathrooms include a Turkish steam bath featuring a sleek marble slab bench.

An English White Cabin Beach Home Tour

I’ve just discovered The White Cabin in the village of Winchelsea, a beach town in East Sussex, South England. And the best part? It’s for rent. Not that I’ll be getting to England any time soon, but oh, a girl can dream. The cottage boasts an open A-frame ceiling, exposed beams (my favorite!), industrial vintage lighting, so many cool rustic touches, bleached white everything, and one heck of a beach side view. Come on in!

Love the rustic floating island in the kitchen, the open shelving, and the black scissor accordion wall lamp.

Also, can we talk about the bleached white floor boards? Think my hubby would notice if I painted our floors all white on a random Tuesday?

Park Slope, Brooklyn Bright White Home Tour

Jessie Randall, the creative director behind one of my absolute favorite shoe and handbag line’s, Loeffler Randall, shares a stunning bright white modern home in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with her husband, three kids and dog. They renovated from top to bottom and the results are brilliant; I had to share just a peek into this home tour.

The home is located in Park Slope, an area becoming more and more popular with each passing year, certainly attracts the coolest of the cool.

And Jessie just seems cool – not that that should surprise anyone at all – in that understated, too cool to realize she’s cool, making dorky even cooler, kind of way. “I do a lot of knitting, cross-stitching, sewing, quilting. I once got asked in an interview what I want to be when I grow up and I said, I want to be a grandmother.”

On arranging her books by color: “The knitting store Purl has everything organized by rainbow colors; it’s lovely. Then I was home for the day last year, and, on a whim, I said, I’m going to do it! It actually took kind of a long time.”

Both the colorful book displays and the unique, yet somehow subtle wallpaper, really pop against a bright white backdrop. (Ahh, the power of white paint!)

Colorful Vintage-Inspired California Family Home

Partners in work and in life, Hannah Henderson and John Moore, own General Store, a Venice favorite, and a must-see classic modern California home (built in 1975) for their young family of four. Since moving in over a decade ago, the couple have made thoughtful updates to the home that highlight the space, while keeping the charm of the original house intact. Their aesthetic, similar to that of the General Store, is full of bohemian touches, colorful fabrics and textiles, livable features, stunning vintage finds (like wall hangings, baskets, flags, souk rugs, macrame, and carved wood hands), wildflowers, and plenty of natural light.

DIY Gold Ikea Book Shelves

I’ll just come right and say it: this was one of those posts that has been sitting in my drafts for ages. Ages, I tell you. With our impending move and the apartment slowly making its way into boxes (with a lot of tears, sweat, and stubbed toes), I realized it was high time I share how we got our beloved gold book shelves (hint hint: we made them!) Now before you go and panic on me, because goodness knows I can relate (the term “DIY” brings on my stress-induced brow furrow), this DIY is way simpler than it seems, and half the battle, really, is putting together those darned Ikea VITTSJÖ shelving units (thanks, hubby!) Plus, at just $70 a piece, these VITTSJÖ units can be transformed into something truly lovely … and gold … wahoo!

It all starts with one of these units …

Then, decide whether you’re going to use gold spray paint and/or gold liquid gilding paint to cover your shelving unit. Also, note: before you start your painting, be sure to put down a piece of plastic dropcloth or lots and lots of newspaper.

Style Me Pretty Home Tour Behind the Blog - glitterinc.com 3 Style-Me-Pretty-Home-Tour-Behind-the-Blog-glitterinc.com-gold-diy-ikea-shelves

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

shelves
spray paint* and/or gold liquid gilding paint**
foam brush (to fix any problem areas and smooth out drippy paint)
plastic dropcloth or newspaper
painter’s mask (if you’re sensitive to the smell of a whole lot of paint)

*If you plan to use spray paint, be sure to over-buy. Each unit needs at least two full cans to look fully coated.
**Having gone the spray painting route, I would probably try painting the unit in gold liquid gilding paint (in addition to the spray paint, because that liquid gold can get expensive) next time. Spray paint requires a large outdoor space (a.k.a., lots of grass and open air); no easy feat when you live on the fifth floor of an apartment building. Also, spray paint can get runny and messy, and I await the day I meet someone truly gifted at wielding the spray paint can (let’s just say my shelves have a few flaws that luckily, are easy to miss in photos.)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Assemble the shelves according to the instructions. (Here’s where I like to bug my husband for help. I always wind up with missing screws and a lopsided shelf.) Be sure not to put the glass shelves on until after you have painted and the paint has completely dried, then simply lay them on each level of your painted metal shelves.
  2. If you are using spray paint, set the unit outside on a large plastic dropcloth and spray paint in two to three light coats, rotating around the unit as needed. If you plan to use gold liquid gilding paint, keep in mind this stuff is pricey and you may want to use it in combination with the spray paint. Whether you use it on its own or with the spray paint, be sure to have a few foam brushes handy to spread the paint on your shelf.
  3. Allow to dry completely before moving/using.

Light and Bright Home in Sweden

I fell for this beautiful airy Swedish home (owned and designed by Sofia of the lovely blog, Mokkasin; and recently featured on Elle Decoration) the moment I saw it.  The home, painted in mostly white, is full of colorful and whimsical touches, hand-crafted wood details, flea market finds, vases full of fresh flowers, books and musical instruments … so very cool.

I’m surprised how much I adore the modern-designed furniture, but in this home, it all just fits.

I’m also pretty smitten with that craft room – all of that pattern and the vintage wood filing cabinets … swoon.

Doesn’t this make you want an all-white kitchen and veranda as soon as possible?
