Behind-the-Scenes: Serenity and Rose Quartz Wedding Inspiration Styled Shoot

A few months back, I teamed up with a few amazing and talented vendors to put together this Pantone-inspired wedding inspiration styled shoot using Pantone’s colors of the year, Serenity and Rose Quartz. The shoot’s theme: a paper-crafted wedding. With so many adventurous DIY brides trying out a few handmade details of their own for their big day, we loved the idea of sharing simple ways to DIY details of your wedding ahead of time while still knowing where and when to hire the pros so that you can enjoy the big day.

Behind-the-Scenes:

In the world of weddings and styled shoots, if you’re trying to get something published in a magazine or on one of the many huge wedding blogs, you have to sit tight and NOT share anything from the shoot until it’s featured. Try telling that to a group of unbelievably excited creatives! We’ve all been nearly bursting with excitement to share this shoot, and then we got the e-mail: we were being published on Ruffled Blog. I couldn’t be more proud, and I’m so excited to share a few special behind-the-scenes details that made the shoot the stunning wedding inspiration that (I hope) it is. Be prepared; it’s a long one with plenty of funny details that go into the making of a styled shoot!

I was crazy for this paper backdrop idea. Using oversized 3D paper pinwheels, balls, and flowers and plenty of clear tape, we hung up this gorgeous paper archway as the ceremony backdrop (and a great place to take photos during the party.) We weaved in metallics – gold, silver, and bronze, to give the Pantone colors a bit more oomph and contrast.

Notice anything familiar? Totally snuck in the clear acrylic chairswe use for parties and my favorite souk rug straight from Scarlett’s nursery.

*We get asked about these chairs ALL OF THE TIME. They’re copies of the much-pricier ghost chairs. You can get them on Amazon!

My jaw dropped when I saw the flowers that Eclectic Sage had brought to the shoot. And Mikkel of Mikkel Paige Photography captured everything in such a gorgeous light. I may never stop sharing these photos.

We decorated the tabletops with plenty of flowers, candlesticks and votives, my favorite gold flatware, geometric cups and glassware (These are THE best because they’re plastic! Hey, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do when living life with a toddler!), gold chargers (Total score from Big Lots! Remember our dining room tour with them?), beautiful paper details, and plenty of metallics mixed in with our pantone colors.

Gold sequin pillows, guys, You can never go wrong with sequins. You know, in moderation.

How cute are these

Sarah of Bella Joviality designed these awesome laser cut “we tied… the knot” decals to put on the bride and groom’s chairs and then we used ribbon tied in a knot to connect their seats.

Details like laser cut names on paper placemats, the paper triangle backdrop behind the cake [You may remember seeing me putting together that beast on Snapchat → glitterinclexi (lots of fun behind-the-scenes there!)], even subtle paper details incorporated into the boutonniere and bouquet.

We wanted to add a pop of color to the bride’s stunning tulle overlay dress (Yes! There’s a lace mini dress under her flowing tulle skirt!); so we used one of the ribbons from our chairs to wrap around her waist and the bride wore a necklace my Aunt got me years ago in Israel. It really is so exciting when all of the little details come together so effortlessly. (Aaaand this is why my car is filled to the brim with accessories and decorative items on shoot days.)

Details like a signature strawberry kiwi cocktail with rock candy stirrers and plenty of rosé wine were a yummy addition and fit right in with our color scheme.

We even had the food catered by Belle’s Catering (who are always amazing to work with!) When in need of a backdrop for your buffet station, casually pick up one of the venue’s room dividers and put it on top of the counter. Perfect backdrop. The food was displayed with hand-lettering on glass panes and mercury glass votive holders and vases.

The caterers’ attention to detail was just incredible.

The dessert table was also tons of fun to put together. We used the white triangle paper backdrop, and a stunning geometric shape cake designed by Sugar Euphoria as the centerpiece.

I loved that the couples’ sweet sendoff included these adorable handmade “yay” flags and more confetti. The bride wore a top and skirt sewn and put together by Alterations by Kali just for the shoot!

How to Decorate Your Home With Pink and Still Keep Your Guy Happy

The other day the topic of a pink sofa came up somehow, and I joked with my husband that he would probably let me get away with adding a pink sofa to our decor (he usually trusts my design decisions … and thank goodness for that). Only he made one of those faces at me as he said it, and I realized, “Okay, mayyybe not a whole sofa.” With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, and my penchant for pink (I mean, seriously, a pink sofa never looked so goodI’m all over it), I’m wondering, “How do you add pink to your home, and still keep your guy happy?”

Now I’m sure plenty of color-loving guys are all for pink, but a lot of guys just haven’t jumped on the pink bandwagon. (Don’t they know, “On Wednesdays, we wear pink”?)

How to Decorate With Pink In Your Home (So That Your Guy Will Actually Love It!)

But with a bit of research, and plenty of edgy cool inspiration, I’ve got thirteen gorgeous examples of ways to incorporate pink that will make everyone happy (guys included), plus a few helpful tips …

  • The key when incorporating guy-approved pink to your home, is by adding in pops of color, paired with edgier pieces, rustic pieces, darker pieces; basically, something to balance the pink. It’s all about balance, people.
  • Start subtle: try shades of blush pink and coral, and work your way up to louder pinks like fuschia and hot pink.
  • Incorporate rose gold metal – another great introduction to pink, without being “too pink” (if there’s such a thing!)
  • Sneak pink into patterns. The busy feel of the patterns will play down the individual colors.

Reign-Inspired Styled Photo Shoot

Anyone who has ever watched the CW show, Reign, has probably fallen deeply in love with the fashion seen on the period drama. A gorgeous blend of vintage and modern, and so many stunning jewels, the queen and her ladies are the epitome of chic. Reign costume-designer, Meredith Markworth-Pollack (who also is/was the costume-designer for Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie), has said that although her “inspirations for Reign come mostly from history and fashion,” … [she] “knew from the beginning that [she would] have an easy time weaving in contemporary accessories.” The designer has notably reached to brands like Free People, Basil SodaDolce & Gabbana, Naeem Khan, and Oscar de la Renta, and Alexander McQueen again and again, and even shops regularly from Net-a-Porter, The Outnet, and BHLDN for the girl’s gowns. How’s that for a swoon-worthy costume lineup?

Naturally, when Angie of La Candella Weddings sent over this stunning Reign-inspired styled photo shoot, I knew I had to share. Better yet, all of the jewelry in the styled shoot is by Rabbitwood & Reason, whose Renaissance-infused jewelry has been worn by Queen Mary on the CW show!

Reign-Inspired Styled Photo Shoot - glitterinc.com

From Angie of La Candella Weddings: I have been in love with the TV show, Reign, ever since I first saw it. That whole era of French Renaissance has always fascinated me. And on top of that, I have been dying to do a photoshoot with a horse. So, when I was contacted by Rabbitwood & Reason, a fabulous jewelry designer whose pieces are Renaissance-inspired (a few of her pieces have actually been worn by Queen Mary on the actual show Reign!), I was all-in. I’ve worked with Sarah (the model) quite a few times now, and we’ve talked several times about doing a photoshoot with a horse. So, I took a drive up to Hinckley, Ohio and we shot this amazing bridal shoot near a dried-up creek bed.

Reign-Inspired Styled Photo Shoot - glitterinc.com

When planning the shoot, the designer and photographer were looking to create a bit of drama and otherworldliness.

The inspiration for the hair and makeup is equally lovely. From the designer: I [wanted] her makeup to reflect that she enjoys the outdoors, and her hair to look somewhat wild, in the fashion of the Pre Raphaelites — a loose style, that looks like she doesn’t care if every strand is in place. I love small braids or interesting twists — I often have at least one hidden braid in my own hair.

Reign-Inspired Styled Photo Shoot - glitterinc.com Reign-Inspired Styled Photo Shoot - red dress - glitterinc.com

And on the relationship between the model and horse, they wanted the images “to display a sense of equality between equine and human, instead of horse and master. There is a special kinship between a lady and her horse, and I’d love to have that shown rather than the model riding the horse with a bit, bridle and saddle in a more dominant role. I think this loose, wild approach could also lend an air of soft romance to the photo shoot, as well as remove specific historical date markers which might be picked up from the modern leather equipment.”

And of course, the costume designer behind the show, Reign does this so well – mixing old and modern seamlessly.

Little Love Notes

breakfast london french toast eggs

Dear week, it’s awfully nice coming into my first day of work back from vacation on a Friday.  Hello, weekend!

Dear baby sister, I can’t believe you’re turning the big 2-0 tomorrow.  You’re more beautiful, wonderful, funny, and brilliant with each and every day.  Can’t wait to karaoke tonight and shop-til-we-drop tomorrow.  Love you always.

Dear honey french toast, you have Sunday written all over you.

Dear pink wedding dress haters, chillax.  Does the color of someone’s wedding dress bother you so much?  I say, wear whatever the heck you want on your wedding day, because it is, after all, your day.  (Read up on all of the pink drama: Dear Celebrities, Stop Trying to Make Pink Wedding Dresses Happen.)  I mean, who wouldn’t want to wear this?

Dear Hermès print, how can I find you? #help

Dear Starbucks fans, a cautionary tale; a.k.a., don’t try this at home, or in real life.  Yuck.

Dear office makeover, these 12 essentials should help.

Dear everyone, this year, be good to yourselves.

Throwing a Holiday Party: Girls Night

I wanted to give the traditional party-planning post a twist this year, by planning my dream holiday party for girls only.  Sometimes it’s nice to just kick back and hang out with your girlfriends, and the holidays are a perfect excuse to bring your fabulous friends together.  Plus, dreaming up a holiday party with a more feminine spin happens to be a whole lot of fun.  I went with a color palette as the main holiday theme: metallics, pink and red.  I would probably serve finger foods and a few very yummy indulgences; cue the chocolate-covered strawberries.

By the way, a fun and festive alternative to champagne for that holiday party?  Sauza® Sparkling Margaritas; because what girl doesn’t love a very pink (a.k.a., the wild berry flavor), very sparkly margarita?  I would also probably serve the pink margaritas over ice and topped with a few raspberries, similar to the signature Sauza® drink I dreamed up, here.

holiday party girls night pop fizz clink gold pink red _ glitterinc.com

  1. Kate Spade Pop Fizz Clink Holiday Cards: Because every great party starts with a gorgeous invitation.
  2. Furbish Studio Python Tray: I collect trays the way some people collect coins or souvenir shot glasses.  I can’t get enough.  And this python tray is sophisticated and sleek … perfect for that girls night in.
  3. Sauza® Sparkling Margaritas:  I love the idea of serving a signature pink sparkling cocktail for a girls night in holiday party.
  4. Rifle Paper Gift Tags:  I love the idea of a gift exchange or secret santa at a BFF girls night.
  5. C. Wonder Gold Ikat Dessert Plates: The perfect excuse to scoop up these adorable gold ikat plates.
  6. Glitter Serving Set:  It’s not a proper girls night without some glitter utensils.
  7. Gold Trim Agate Coasters:  My blogger buddy, Jenn recently got me a set of these gold agate coasters and I cannot wait to throw my own girly bash to serve drinks (and squeal about my coasters!)
  8. Ban.do Hearts: This sequin heart hair clip/brooch would make the perfect party favor.
  9. Pottery Barn Glitter Alphabet Ornaments:  It might even be cute to buy a glitter letter for each guest so that she can take her ornament home after the party to hang in her own home.
  10. Serena & Lily Gold Glass Ornaments:  I just love these.
  11. Anthropologie Cheers Cocktail Napkins:  The perfect party napkins.

For a relaxed twist to the girls night in, it might be fun to add a mandatory pajamas-only dress code, and include favorite holiday movies to the night’s events.  Pink drinks, appetizers, desserts, and Love Actually (followed by The Holiday) … sounds like a perfect night.

By the way, you can connect with Sauza® on Pinterest, and check out the Sauza® Holiday Party video.  I’ve created my own “Get the Party Started” inspired Pinterest board with a few party ideas as well. #SauzaSparkling @SauzaTequila

Trend to Try: Black & White + Blush

Black and white are two major staples in my closet, and in the cooler months, I practically live in the color combination.  This Fall, I’m trying to throw in a pop of color, and I know I’ve stumbled upon a Fall accent color that is just right: blush.  (Ahem: have you seen my new site design? I’m all for the soft blush paired with black, white, and charcoal.  Swoon.)  I’ve never been one to wear anything overtly pink – though I love the color and will buy office accessories in pink for days.  But blush is subtle, it’s soft and warm, and when paired with crisp black and white, it’s chic, romantic, and ever-fashionable.  The color palette also feels equal parts modern and classic, and is simple to throw together while still looking perfect.
