My Nighttime and Morning Routine; a.k.a., How I Totally Cheat and Look Well-Rested

This post is sponsored by Neutrogena. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. Thank you so much for supporting the sponsors who help to make Glitter, Inc. possible!

Let’s talk beauty routines. I’ve always been a fan of face cream and sleep, and of course I love my makeup, but lately, all I really want to do is combat aging and looking “tired.”

Ugh, this topic. I know no one really wants to talk about that dirty word. You’ve heard it a million times before. The word “tired.” Any time someone tells me I look “tired,” I automatically assume I look like butt. And worse still, as I’m getting older, I worry that “tired” is synonymous with “old”. I shudder at the thought. I’m old, it’s cool. But I sure don’t want to look old.

USING A NIGHTTIME CREAM

Looking well-rested starts the night before.

I recently started using Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream and I’m totally impressed. I’ve always tried to use a nighttime cream before bed. My Grandma has been covering her face, arms, and hands with lotion for as long as I can remember, and she has the most unbelievably soft skin. By high school, I was lathering up too.

Once I hit the big 3-0 I really started committing to a nighttime lotion routine. I’ve been curious about retinol and this was the most perfect introduction to it. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream is an anti-aging face cream with retinol to

Retinol works to continuously renew the look of your skin by helping smooth wrinkles and diminish the look of age spots. Neutrogena’s formula also contains ingredients that result in rapid improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hydrates and plumps your complexion, and replenished and rejuvenates the look of dull skin.

SLEEP

Trust me, as a mama, this one gets tough. I’ll be the first to admit it. But this mama needs her beauty sleep. And it ain’t called “beauty sleep” for nothin’. How about we call this one, sleep and coffee?

So here’s my tip for sleeping well: Read before bed. Anything; a few pages of a book, a magazine you’ve been dying to dig into – just something to take your mind off of the noise and chaos of the day. This has made a huge difference for me. Before I started reading before bed, I would always run through the things I had to do the next day again and again in my mind, scrambling out of sleep to write something down or text myself something to remember. Now, so long as I read a few pages out of a good book or magazine, I fall asleep thinking about the story, and I sleep so much easier.

A BEAUTY ARSENAL

I have a self-prescribed beauty arsenal that’s part of my morning routine, and it really helps to get an even, flawless glow.

Let’s tell the truth: coffee isn’t always going to cut it. And enough sleep just doesn’t always happen. And no amount of awesome cream is going to wake you up. A few tried and true makeup products can really come in handy.

Avon MagiX Face Perfector: Shout out to my own Mama who sent me a tube of Avon MagiX Face Perfector. I am obsessed. Obsessed, I tell you. I’m also through with my first one and I’m thinking of having her order me two at a time, you know, just in case. I’ve always put sunscreen on my face, so the fact that this primer has a built in SPF 20 is perfect. It’s also oil-free and you can wear it alone or under foundation. It almost turns to powder when you glide it on your face – it’s so soft and sheer and makes your skin matte and glowy at the same time. (I’m making no sense, but it’s magic.)

Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk UV Foundation SPF 20: This is hands down one of the most popular foundations on the market. (Just read the reviews!) It’s expensive, and I’ve tried so many other brands hoping to find a cheaper alternative, but no dice; this foundation wins every time. It’s got SPF (awesome), wears like a dream, has great build-able coverage, but still feels lightweight, and actually lasts all day. I just can’t quit the stuff.

Algenist REVEAL Concentrated Color Correcting Drops: Algenist recently sent me these drops and I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. I mean, why would I add green drops to my foundation? Umm, this stuff is brilliant. All you do is add a drop or two onto your foundation brush to instantly color correct, treat skin, and cover imperfections. It works. It’s fascinating.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination: Dark circles are usually the giveaway that you’re more tired than usual. I love all of It Cosmetics’ under eye formulas. They’re full-coverage, waterproof, and do the job. This one is particularly awesome because it’s infused with subtle radiance and helps to brighten underneath the eyes. (I also love and use this one regularly.)

Remember to pat your under-eye cream gently beneath your eyes, working from the inner corner outwards

Then using your favorite foundation brush, cover your whole face, including over your dark circles, with a thick formula foundation, and then pat – don’t rub – lightly with your finger just under your eyes until it blends.

Yves Saint Laurent Anti-Cernes Multi-Action Concealer: This little stick is great to cover any blemishes, dark spots, you name it. It’s also convenient so I can throw it in my bag for the day, and the stick application makes it pretty goof-proof.

My Favorite Holiday Nail Polish Colors This Season

I love nail polish. With every move over the years, I’ve forced myself to narrow down my must-have nail polishes, and toss the half-dried bottles that are clearly beyond saving. And even after all of the purging, I still have a pretty formidable bucket of nail polish favorites. When Essie sent me their Winter 2016 Collection, it took all of my willpower to not drool over the perfect Holiday colors. They’ve quickly become my favorite holiday nail polish colors of the season.

My Favorite Holiday Nail Polish Colors This Season. Click through for the details. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

Isn’t it funny how such a simple thing, a nail polish color, can really add so much impact to an outfit? Over the Holidays, everyone wants to get a little extra festive. I tend to reach for classic holiday reds, with the occasional snowy white every once in a while. (And of course, I never tire of black nail polish … and here’s why you should try it.)

But gold? Oh my gosh, guys – Getting Groovy – Essie’s signature holiday gold color, is dreamy. Described as a metallic palladium gold, this gold is classic, not too jarring, and feels softer than a typical harsher gold.

The classic red of the group, Party on a Platform, is described as a towering London garnet red crème. Is cheeky, and a bit deeper than a classically bright red. I’m in love.

Ready to Boa is such a beautiful fall/winter color. It’s a dark red with a stunning shimmer mixed in.

Satin Sister is described as a sleek ebony peacock blue but it feels more deep green to me. I liked this one way more than I thought I would. It’s striking on.

Oh Behave, a minx peach frost, is adorable and sweet. It works in any season.

Go With The Flowy, a cloudlike dove gray with subtle shimmer, is super wearable and one of my favorites in the collection.

If you’re not sure which to try, you can play with a handful when you snag the Essie Winter Collection Mini Set.

Which holiday nail polish color is your favorite? Do you stick to a classic red over the holidays or do you go for something funkier with a metallic gold or deep winter green?

Big thanks to Essie for sending me the Essie Winter 2016 Holiday Nail Polish Collection!

Confessions of a Shopaholic: Fall Beauty

It’s time for a little beauty edition of my favorite things, so I’ve rounded up a few of the beauty items (think hair, makeup, and skin) that I’ve been using and love, plus a few on my wish list this season; a.k.a., the shopaholic confessions.

Read on to check out my favorites – including why they’re my favorites – and be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this post for THREE chances at WINNING a $175 Sephora gift card to stock up on your own fall beauty must-haves!

I’ve fallen for Zoya nail polish and I’m stocking up for fall. It’s a Big Five Free, a.k.a., toxin free nail polish and their color selection and quality is incredible. (Just added to my cart: Anja is a rich, deep, vampy red-toned wine purple with a glossy creme finish, perfect for the cold seasons ahead, and Claudine is a shimmering black metallic with a vein of gold to soften it. Be still, my black-loving heart.)

Drop everything and buy IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination Waterproof Concealer. (Say that three times fast.) This is a miracle in a bottle. I can hide even my darkest undereye circles in an instant with this stuff. It’s that good. Next on my list is Bobbi Brown’s Instant Confidence Stick; it’s basically velvet in a bottle that helps to smooth out wrinkles and lines before you put on your makeup.

Is it wrong to want a beauty product mostly because of the packaging? The new Hourglass Blush, Bronzer & Strobe Ambient Lighting Palette (which are always gorgeous to begin with) is dressed in WHITE MARBLE. I want.

Also, I cannot stop smelling myself. This scent smells exactly like it sounds: Florence. Jasmine and gardenia and everything subtle and soft and pretty.

I am in love with the T3 Twirl Convertible Curling Iron, and now I want to buy additional barrels to achieve different waves and curls. Obsessed. And while we’re on the subject of hair tools, is anyone else totally curious about the new dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer? Is this going to be the world’s best hair dryer? I’m intrigued.

Rumor has it, Trish McEvoy High Volume Mascara is made of magic (okay, mostly science.) The revolutionary formula forms a water-resistant, 360-degree coating around lashes (kind of like tubes), dries instantly, adds major volume, and can’t smudge or smear. How crazy cool is that? AND, right now, Nordstrom is throwing in a full-size Beauty Booster Lip & Cheek Color with your $100 Trish purchase.

Speaking of Trish, I bought a Trish McEvoy 24-Hour Eyeshadow and Eyeliner a few months back and I can’t get enough. I use the shimmering eyeshadow/eyeliner stick in place of eyeliner during the day when I want to keep my makeup low-key, or I top my eyeliner with a darker color, like Dove, for a night out. The shimmer is subtle but adds such a glamorous touch that’s pretty much goof-proof. Can you tell I’m not a big risk-taker when it comes to makeup?

I can’t believe I still haven’t tried the uber lush Tom Ford line of lipstick. Fall marks the start of my favorite lipstick-wearing season – hello, mauve, deep plum, burgundy, blood red, and cranberry – so I’m thinking about finally buying myself a tube or two of the coveted Tom Ford lip color. (Dreaming about Cherry Lush, Dark and Stormy, and Casablanca.) I’ve also heard good things about Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche LipstickTannin looks like the perfect fall shade (and at $26 its definitely more affordable than Tom Ford) and somehow I have never tried Mac Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in either Sin or Diva (both are bestselling vampy shades that have been standouts from the line for years and at just $17 a tube, I might have to splurge and try both. I loooove a vampy lip.)

By the way, if you’re looking for a simple way to organize your makeup on the go, these Truffle clear pouches are a lifesaver.

Okay, clearly the list goes on and on …

These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag

This post has been sponsored by Burt’s Bees in partnership with Ahalogy. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you so much for supporting the sponsors that make Glitter, Inc. possible!

I’ve been waiting on the arrival of fall a little too excitedly. Once those temperatures start to drop, I’m all in: boots, scarves, dark nail polish, all of the pumpkin spice. I just can’t help myself. Truth is, I grew up in Miami; a tropical oasis that sits in a 90-degree bubble all year long. Moving to North Carolina was an eye-opener. There are seasons, y’all. And I stinkin’ love it.

These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag

So I’m wasting no time and swapping out my fall bag, stat. The key is to update your beauty must-haves to fit the season. I’m not one to carry my whole beauty arsenal in my day-to-day bag. (I’m too busy stuffing my purse with everything else. Yep, I’m a chronic heavy-purse-wearer; so my beauty bag has to stay light.)

When it comes to my beauty bag – the one I carry with me on a daily basis – I try to keep it simple:

  • Matte Powder
  • Under-eye concealer (Picked this up in the beauty aisle of Target recently and I can’t say enough good things! It hides stubborn dark under-eye circles and also conceals unwanted blemishes and discoloration.)
  • Travel-sized Perfume
  • Eye-liner (In case I have plans to head to dinner after a busy day, I always try to keep an eyeliner on hand to refresh my look for nighttime.)
  • Eyeshadow Stick (See above.)
  • Small blush (Any time I’m tired I start to fade into the palest shade of pale. Keeping a small blush is my brightened-up secret weapon.)
  • Burt’s Bees Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm (Guys, I’m obsessed.)
  • Sunglasses (When all else fails, sunglasses fix everything.)

These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag

Now here’s the secret: If you’re a pumpkin fanatic like I am, stock up on your Burt’s Bees Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm now; there’s a limited availability and it will only be in Target stores through October.

These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag

Oh yeah, you read that right: you can only get Burt’s Bees Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm a couple of months every year, and you know I’m stocking up. It’s sold exclusively at Target stores and you should be able to find a whole bunch at your local Target store in the Burt’s Bees side-
cap within the Natural Beauty aisle.

I’ve long been a fan of the Burt’s Bees Lip Balm formula. It’s super moisturizing but doesn’t leave a weird, gunky wax buildup like some lip balms do. All of the Burt’s Bees flavors smell incredible but I’m extra partial to Vanilla and the Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice. The Pumpkin Spice in particular is subtle and warm, with notes of cinnamon and vanilla.

These Are the Must-Have Beauty Products in My Fall Bag

I’m thinking Burt’s Bees Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm would also make for a perfect little gift. I mean, who doesn’t love pumpkin spice everything in the fall?

Messy Bun Upgrade: Put a Velvet Chignon Bow On It

Messy Bun Upgrade: Put a Velvet Chignon Bow On It (This nifty 90s-inspired hair tool will be your new best friend!)

I am a serial bun wearer. I wish I could muster the energy to get more creative with my hairdo, but mostly, first thing in the morning, I just want coffee. Between getting Scarlett ready, the dog outside, and that life-giving cup of coffee in my hands, my hair typically falls in last place. It’s not until the UPS guy shows up at our door that I realize I look like a hot mess.

And then I stumble upon this nifty little hair tool, and my bun dreams have pretty much been answered. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “Lexi, it’s just a stupid ribbon.” But that’s the thing, it’s not. Reminiscent of these (kinda nerdy) ponytail wraps of the nineties, this “ribbon” hair tool actually has hidden wire so that your pretty little ribbon stays put. You get that whimsical bow look without it constantly slipping out of your hair throughout the day. The wire will also help to secure your bun; a.k.a., a total lazy girl’s bun win. So yeah, I’m kind of excited about putting a bow in my everyday bun, but this bow is magical and beautiful and mine, all mine.
