The Perfect Diaper Bag: Lily Jade (Meggan + Madeline Review, Plus a GIVEAWAY!)

I am WAY too excited about today’s post. I have been crushing on Lily Jade diaper bags for what feels like an eternity, and last Fall, I finally went for it, during a sale, of course, and snatched up my first ever Lily Jade diaper bag; the Meggan. And then, as fate would have it, Lily Jade asked me to collaborate on a review post AND diaper bag giveaway, and I jumped at the chance. Which means, I get to share with you the brand new and improved Lily Jade Madeline diaper bag in Camel with Jade lining, plus a side-by-side look at my Meggan in Brandy and Jade, what’s in my Lily Jade diaper bag, and one very awesome GIVEAWAY at the very end of this post!

Like most stylish mamas, I was loathe to give up my beautiful handbags for a … gasp … DIAPER BAG. I actually relented so much that hubby and I invested in a rather pricey designer tote bag that I deemed my “diaper bag” those first few months. Well, that lasted about three months into having a newborn. Don’t get me wrong, that beautiful tote still makes an appearance for special occasions and trips, and I love it SO much, but I just couldn’t bring myself to put dirty diapers inside it, and everything was getting lost in the endless cavern that is a tote bag. Then I switched to a nylon designer diaper bag, that I liked, but didn’t love. It still LOOKED like a diaper bag, and admittedly, nylon, even in black with fancy designer hardware, just wasn’t my style. I’ve had other diaper bags over the years, and though they were very cute, they always looked and felt like a diaper bag.

I remember spotting a favorite blogger or two rocking a Lily Jade diaper bag in various Instagrams, and I was always surprised to see it actually was a diaper bag (and not just a great and functional leather bag). And then I sort of fell down the rabbit hole that is Lily Jade’s Instagram feed. Nothing will have you dreaming of a Lily Jade diaper bag, more than their feed.

Here’s why: the bags don’t look like diaper bags. They look like gorgeous designer leather bags. The kind you would save up months for. The kind people constantly ask, “Where did you get that bag?” And then fellow mamas find out your bag is actually a diaper bag, and they’re demanding answers. I’ve been stopped countless times, just to get the details on my Lily Jade diaper bag. It is so pretty in person, and the fact that it is a fully functional diaper bag, makes it pretty unbelievable.

And, fun bonus, my husband LIKES these bags. He doesn’t mind carrying them at all. He’s always been great with carrying my purses, diaper bags, etc., but it’s nice not to have to force him into carrying a diaper bag with a baby duck print on it.

So let’s dive right in, shall we? Say hello to my brand new Lily Jade Madeline bag.

Here’s a peak inside my Lily Jade Madeline bag; insert included. By the way, the insert is a washable 12 pocket organizer with two small handles that tuck away when not in use. It also includes a matching changing pad.

We had just come back from a trip (thus the passport, extra activities, etc.), and I was easily able to use the Madeline for travel. The small zipper compartment at the top flap of the Madeline is great for travel too because you can slip your ID in there when going through security at the airport, etc. Little details and compartments like that, the kind that are so well thought out, are what really made me fall for Lily Jade.

WHAT’S IN MY LILY JADE DIAPER BAG?

I like to use these Travelon zip pouches for everyday use (and especially for travel) to keep extra organized. The pockets in the Lily Jade organizer are amazing, but I also really like having at least two diapers, wipes, diaper cream, and a change of clothes in a separate Travelon pouch, so that I can just grab the pouch and a changing pad – without having to bring the whole diaper bag – into the bathroom. This is a lifesaver on planes and in small bathrooms. The larger pouches are pretty flat, and slip right into the Lily Jade, just behind the insert.

I’ll also use the small zip pouches for things like medicine, and my own makeup.

Then I organize my keys and Tile, wallet, phone, iPad (I’ve been reading like crazy and I love all of the free books you can check out from the library; plus, it never hurts to have an iPad on a long day out when the little one starts to melt down!), an external battery charger for long days on the go, a small hair brush (we love these!), sunscreen, antibacterial, Shout wipes, sunglasses (for mommy and mini), extra clips and hair ties, a sippy cup for Scarlett and often a water bottle for me, and snacks, into the Lily Jade insert.

The pockets in the insert are all nice and deep, so you can easily fit a baby bottle, sippy cup, your own water bottle, etc. What I really love about the Madeline are the huge pockets on the front of the bag as well. They’re deceptively HUGE pockets, and can fit bottles in those pockets as well. Having a place to keep bottles on the outside of the bag is a big help when you’ve got the case of a leaky sippy cup.

It really can hold it all!

The Lily Jade Madeline has an adjustable, detachable extra long strap for messenger carry or backpack carry. All of the straps are soft and wide, making it really comfortable, no matter how you carry it. Each bag has a pretty leather tassel with natural stone beads that really dresses it up.

As for wearing the bag …

It can be worn as a shoulder bag; probably one of the quickest ways to just grab your bag and go. And I love the option of either using the long strap or the handles. The handles are extra soft and extra long, so it sits extremely comfortably on your shoulder using the double handles.

It can also be worn using the long strap as a crossbody or messenger bag

I also really like the depth of this bag. It’s easy to reach into – especially from the crossbody position. A review of the brand new Lily Jade Madeline diaper bag, plus a side-by-side look at my Meggan, what's in my Lily Jade diaper bag, and a GIVEAWAY! | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

And … drumroll, please … it can be worn as a backpack! This is a huge selling point for most parents because having a backpack option on a diaper bag means you can go completely hands-free. When you’re out and about with babies and kids, having the freedom to move around is pretty priceless. The backpack style is also probably the most comfortable, and keeps all of that weight off of one shoulder when you’ve really packed a lot for the day; i.e., a day at the Zoo or Disney.

I actually also own the Lily Jade Meggan in Brandy with a Jade lining, so I wanted to show you a quick comparison of the two bags – the Madeline and the Meggan (two of their most popular bags!) – side-by-side.

Before I forget, all of the Lily Jade bags have magnetic closures, so even if it looks like there may be complicated buckles, don’t fret, they’re just for show, and actually smoothly and quietly (key, with a sleeping little one!) open and close using magnets.

A review of the brand new Lily Jade Madeline diaper bag, plus a side-by-side look at my Meggan, what's in my Lily Jade diaper bag, and a GIVEAWAY! | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

I love that both have the jade lining and large jade insert, so I can easily swap bags by simply pulling out the insert in one bag, and tuck it into the other bag, when I want to bring that bag for the day. It’s also a great excuse to stock up on Lily Jade bags! (Yeah, I’m a little bit addicted.)

The Meggan is a bit taller, though it’s hard to tell from the picture since the leather on both is so soft, and it’s hard to keep them standing upright. Especially without the insert in them. The Meggan also has the adjustable, detachable extra long strap for messenger carry or backpack carry and the wide leather double straps for shoulder or arm carry.

And here’s a picture we snapped before a recent vacation, with the Meggan on it’s own. It’s a great travel bag because it can fit SO much. Think everything I mentioned earlier in this post, plus lots of toys, a baby blanket, and more.

The 10 Prettiest Spring Shoes at J.Crew Right Now

Though I’ll forever love boots, Spring shoes have always been on my radar. I’m a shoe lover through and through, which means I am ALL for experimenting with funkier shoes. I’m known to wear an all-black outfit (basically all day, every day) along with a wild pair of shoes. Patterns, color, prints, pom-poms, tassels, studs, even glitter, I am a funky shoe loving fiend. And Spring shoes fit the bill. Every season, I swoon over all of the fresh Spring takes. I think it’s that Spring straddles the line with weather – somedays are still cool, and some start to warm up – so heels, flats, booties and sandals are all game. And color and pattern is the name of the game, because, well, SPRING!

I’ve rounded up the 10 prettiest Spring shoes at J.Crew right now, and ALL of them are on my wish list. Any favorites?

The Family-Friendly Guide to San Diego, Part 2

Last week I shared the first part of our recent trip to San Diego, with plenty of family-friendly places to visit and things to do, particularly in the Coronado area. Today I’m back with part 2, wrapping up the rest of our trip in La Jolla!

By the way, you might remember, we’ve traveled to San Diego before, and if you’re looking for a beautifully scenic visit, you’ll love this post. (Can you believe how teeny tiny Scarlett was back then?)

For the second part of this San Diego trip, we decided to venture over to La Jolla Cove. We had the most perfect stay at The Grande Colonial and instantly fell in love with the beautiful boutique hotel, it’s incredible location right above the water (and the seals!), and all that there is to do within walking distance.

I remember being smitten with La Jolla when we visited a couple of years ago, and this trip was no different. Staying in a hotel right in the heart of it all, well that was just the icing on the cake.

I mean guys, this was our view from our hotel room.

Starting each day with a strong cup of coffee and the ocean breeze right outside, that wasn’t too shabby either.

Now let’s talk La Jolla …

On our first evening in La Jolla, we were all getting pretty hungry and tired. Our concierge recommended we try Catania, just a few short steps from our hotel, and we walked over to what turned out to be one of my favorite Italian meals ever. All of the pasta was homemade, the salads were so fresh and unique, and they were even able to make a pasta marinara for Scarlett that had no milk or butter in it. Between a hared kale salad, my Tagliattelle alla Portofino and Hubby’s Braised Lamb Gnocchi, we ate like kings.

La Jolla is full of gorgeous sites and shopping, shopping, and more shopping. There were so many awesome boutiques; everything from on-trend clothing to stores stacked high with rugs.

On our first morning we had breakfast at Cody’s La Jolla. Solid breakfast, gorgeous patio seating with a view to everything. It’s steps away from seal cove as well.

What is it with toddlers and bacon? Scarlett has turned into the pickiest eater, but she’ll never ever turn down bacon.

The Family-Friendly Guide to San Diego, Part 2. Click through for our trip details. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

Clearly, the bacon was a hit at Cody’s.

I just wanted all of their succulents.

The seals are everywhere, and Scarlett was so excited once she realized just how many there were.

If you’re in the La Jolla area and craving fish tacos, Puesto is a great option. You can find pictures and a little review in our last post here.

Just around the corner from Puesto is the coolest art installation wall. Totally Instagram-worthy.

This time around we ventured out a bit to Historic Barrio Logan to try a new taco place: Salud. It was about as authentic as they come – with huge, and I mean huge, grills lining the outside of the restaurant where all of the meat and tortillas were being made as you wait in line. Scarlett was winding down at that point, so hubby hopped out and picked up our tacos. They were spicy and wrapped in freshly grilled corn tortillas. So good.

The Family-Friendly Guide to San Diego, Part 2. Click through for our trip details. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

I’m still dreaming about their guacamole and those battered shrimp.

The Family-Friendly Guide to San Diego, Part 2. Click through for our trip details. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

For late night tacos (because, why not?), try Adalbertos. They had me at all-you-can-eat homemade tortilla chips, and some pretty fantastic shredded chicken tacos.

Another fun adventure around the area: Liberty Station. Liberty Station is a huge outdoor mall of sorts, full of great restaurants, museums, Liberty Public Market (stall after stall of gourmet food), and one of hubby’s favorite places to visit when we’re in San Diego, Stone Brewery. (If you’re staying in La Jolla, you’ll need a car to get to this one.)

The Family-Friendly Guide to San Diego, Part 2. Click through for our trip details. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

On our second morning in La Jolla we had breakfast at The Cottage. It was amazing and if you’re ever in the area, and LOVE breakfast, this is your place. The stuffed french toast is incredible, and I’m still dreaming about their scones and homemade strawberry jelly.

The Family-Friendly Guide to San Diego, Part 2. Click through for our trip details. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

And because we’re gluttons, we also checked out Sugar & Scribe. Their brownies and cinnamon roll croissants are pretty out of this world and they had a vegan banana cake that Scarlett devoured.

Oh, and since we’re on the grand tour of baked goods, if you’re looking for a vegan treat, Cinnaholic is AMAZING. They were on Shark Tank and came highly recommended, so we headed to the nearest Cinnaholic – just a short drive from our hotel – and we were not disappointed. Don’t ask me how, but all of their baked goods, including the cinnamon rolls and toppings they’re famous for, are egg-free, dairy-free, and 100% vegan. And while the cinnamon rolls are great, and the toppings and glazes just a little too sweet for my liking, the chocolate chip cookie is basically the best thing ever, and I’ll be feverishly working to replicate that recipe ASAP.

On our last night we had dinner at The Grande Colonial’s own Zagat rated NINE-TEN Restaurant. Dimly lit, and a bit dressed up, I was worried about how well Scarlett would do here, but she actually had a blast. They were super accommodating of little kids and had an awesome kids’ menu. The food was INCREDIBLE and I’m so glad we made time to enjoy it. I’m still dreaming about the sea bass and hubby couldn’t stop singing the half baked chocolate cake’s praises. If you’re looking for a treat when you’re out one night in La Jolla Cove, NINE-TEN is it.

By the way, I had to share the cuteness. Does anyone else have little ones who LOVE checking out hotel bath tubs and and all of the bath products? Scarlett is fascinated by all of the little bottles and soaps, and spends at least an hour in every hotel bath tub trying everything out. It’s pretty darn adorable.

How to Make 3-Ingredient Homemade Pop-Tarts

My family has fallen hard for this simple homemade pop-tart recipe. These 3-ingredient pop-tarts are super simple to throw together; they use a combination of store bought ingredients, and stuff we always have on hand.

They’re also a lot of fun to make with your family and kids. Oh, and did I mention they’re totally yummy? To get your kids in on the action, just cut out your rectangles and let the little ones go to town filling and then decorating their own special pop-tarts. Scarlett loves topping hers with sprinkles and telling us exactly which ones are hers. The combinations are pretty endless and it’s extra fun eating a pop-tart you made yourself.

How to Make 3-Ingredient Homemade Pop-Tarts; including a vegan version! Kids LOVE making these. Click through for the simple recipe. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

And the best part in my book about these 3-ingredient homemade pop-tarts? They can be made vegan, because most store bought pie crust has no dairy in it! (We use Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crust.)

I made two different milk-free, vegan versions of these homemade pop-tarts for Scarlett and she was SO excited. Her vegan versions had either jam inside or Dairy-Free Chocolate Chips* and marshmallow fluff; a.k.a., vegan s’mores pop-tarts. Both were then topped with a modified version of the frosting that’s super simple to make; we just substituted almond milk.

(Scarlett is allergic to milk protein, so we’re always experimenting with vegan and dairy-free recipes, in case you want to check them out!)

*We use Enjoy Life chocolate chunks and chips; they’re gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and soy-free, and totally delicious. They also bake incredibly well. Even Target carries them! Obviously, you can use regular semi-sweet chocolate here instead if you don’t need to keep the recipe vegan or dairy-free.

Now let’s talk about how to make these awesome 3-ingredient homemade pop-tarts …

How to Make 3-Ingredient Homemade Pop-Tarts; including a vegan version! Kids LOVE making these. Click through for the simple recipe. | glitterinc.com | @glitterinc

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE POP-TARTS

Makes 8-10 pop-tarts.

INGREDIENTS

Store bought refrigerated pie crust
Rectangle Cookie Cutter (or sharp knife)
Strawberry or Peach jam
Nutella (optional)
Marshmallow Fluff (optional)
Confectioners sugar
Milk (I used almond milk and it worked like a charm!)
Sprinkles (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Using a rectangle cookie cutter or sharp knife, cut each pie crust into 8, fairly equal sized rectangles.
  3. Lay half (about 8) of your rectangles on a greased or parchment lined baking sheet.
  4. Top each rectangle with about a tablespoon or less of jam or marshmallow fluff and/or Nutella (leaving a perimeter of about a half an inch all the way around). Be sure not to overstuff or it will leak out as it is baking.
  5. Lay the other halves of the rectangles on top of the 8 that you topped with jam, Nutella, etc., and using the tines of a fork, seal each pop-tart along all four edges.
  6. Bake for approximately 10 minutes, or until crust is slightly golden brown.
  7. Remove from oven, and let cool on the pan for a few minutes and then transfer to a wire rack.

For the Icing

In the meantime, mix a half a cup of confectioners sugar with a tablespoon of milk. (Consistency is key here; if your icing is runny, add a bit more sugar and if it’s too thick, add a bit more milk. You want it spreadable/pourable.)

Spread or pour a bit of icing on top of each pop-tart (now on the wire rack) and top with sprinkles or drizzle with Nutella.

Hubby loved our version of s’mores pop-tarts. We filled our s’mores pop-tarts with a thin layer of marshmallow fluff and Nutella and then drizzled a little glaze and Nutella on top. (See above for Scarlett’s vegan version.) The s’mores pop-tarts taste amazing still warm out of the oven.
