Little Love Notes

Gorgeous Flowers in an Office

We’ve given up and we’re leaving the packing to fend for itself for the weekend because … we’re headed on a little road trip to visit my Aunt in the mountains. We’re just taking a short trip, but I’m so happy to be getting away. Scarlett is such a nature lover, so I’m looking forward to letting her explore a little. Plus, I think I’ve convinced hubby to take us to Ikea on our way back to the Triangle (there’s no Ikea in our area … the horror!) I’ll be sharing a look at what we’re up to throughout the weekend over on instagramfacebooktwitter, and snapchat → glitterinclexi (lots of fun behind-the-scenes there). Follow along!

How about you? Any exciting weekend plans?

With that, a few little love notes …

Get Inspired: The DIY White Brick Fireplace

When we first walked into our new home I fell in love with so many little details: the open living room plan, the white kitchen with granite countertops, the oversized master shower and bathtub. What I didn’t fall in love with? Some of the design choices and older characteristics of the home, like green walls, black velour shutters (I know!), and a fireplace that looked to be from the year one.

Little by little we’re making changes, and one of the easier and more budget-friendly ways to make a major impact is by painting. We already have big plans for the walls, but I keep eyeing our red brick fireplace. I love classic brick, but paired with it’s rather old faded gold doors and huge brick ledge, I keep thinking there has to be a way to modernize the fireplace. The plan: to paint it white (and eventually replace those aging doors.) My thinking is, the white fireplace will help to brighten the somewhat dark room and will give the fireplace a more contemporary feel. Though admittedly, hubby has me nervous. He keeps asking me if I’m sure I want to paint it white, because it will be tough to go back. But heck, why not?

HINT: When painting your brick fireplace, you’ll need to use several coats of paint. I suggest buying a paint with primer in it and then painting three-to-four thin coats. (There is an old how-to post from Young House Love that’s helpful.)

This is the inspiration we’re working with …

Brunettes: Here’s How to Easily (and Subtly) Lighten Your Hair at Home

I partnered with John Frieda® Hair Care to bring you this sponsored post. Thank you so much for supporting the sponsors that make this little blog possible!

I’ve been dreaming about going a bit lighter with my hair color for summer, but with a packed schedule (hellohuge move!), and a very busy toddler, getting myself to a hair salon just hasn’t been in the cards. So when John Frieda® reached out with this awesome opportunity to try out one of their Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ and Visibly Deeper™ collections, available at Walmart, I knew it was a perfect opportunity.

Brunettes: Here's How to Easily (and Subtly) Lighten Your Hair at Home for that Perfect Sun-Kissed Glow (without any brassiness, right in your shower!)

I went with John Frieda® Hair Care’s Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ collection, which includes a shampoo, conditioner, and instant treatment. All of the products are meant to be used in the shower, without any fuss, or mess.

Released this year, the Visibly Brighter™ collection is unlike any product I’ve ever seen before. Seriously, rethink everything you know about achieving amazing hair color. The Visibly Brighter™ collection lightens and brightens your hair without any brassiness, right in your shower. The idea is that it enhances your natural brunette with a sun-kissed glow and will visibly brighten your hair. The products are easy to use (truly, you can’t mess this up!), and also happen to smell AH-mazing.

Brunettes: Here's How to Easily (and Subtly) Lighten Your Hair at Home for that Perfect Sun-Kissed Glow (without any brassiness, right in your shower!)

When it comes to beauty risks, I take baby steps. I’ve only colored my hair ONCE, and I whimper through haircuts when my poor stylist is only taking off an inch or two at most. But, John Frieda® Hair Care’s Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ collection allows me to take a little risk with my hair – going a bit lighter and brighter – right from my own bathroom and without too drastic a change. These products are non-damaging and will provide subtle change, so it’s a fun way to try a new shade without any worry or real commitment. The resulting brightening is subtle, but so pretty. It looks like my hair is sun-kissed, and I love that: especially for summer.

To brighten your hair, you can use the Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ Subtle Lightening Shampoo and Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ Subtle Lightening Conditioner duo between 3-5 times, or, for something instant (but still subtle) — there’s also the Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ In-Shower Lightening Treatment which will lighten you up to one shade after one quick 5-minute use! I used the combination of all three, and although the change was subtle, it was summer-perfect. If you love the look, simply wash and or condition using Visibly Brighter™ products.

By the way, these products work on natural, highlighted and color-treated hair so they’re great for everyone. And, if you’re a brunette who wants to go a shade deeper, John Frieda® Hair Care also has another trio of products called Visibly Deeper™ that’s formulated with cocoa and evening primrose oil, Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Deeper™ Color Deepening shampoo and conditioner infuses rich, dark tones so you can deepen the spectrum of your brunette color. You can find the John Frieda® Hair Care’s Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ and Visibly Deeper™ Collections at Walmart.

Little Love Notes

A few little love notes to the things I loved most this week, including this Sézane Gilda Dress.

Three cheers for the weekend! We have absolutely no plans and I’m very happy with that. Though rumor has it, this weekend may just be one of the hottest of summer, so anything we do will involve water or a whole lot of AC (and hopefully this adorable dress.) After that it’s more home projects and weekend work catch-up. Riveting stuff, I know. As always, I’ll be sharing a look at what we’re up to throughout the weekend over on instagramfacebooktwitter, and snapchat → glitterinclexi (lots of fun behind-the-scenes there). Follow along!

How about you? Any exciting weekend plans?

With that, a few little love notes …

Dear DIYs to try, this Ikea dresser upgrade is simple and lovely.

Dear globetrotters, this photographer transforms famous locations into amazing artwork using paper cut-out props.

Dear making strides, California students will now get to learn about LGBT history in school, after a unanimous vote by the California State Board of Education.

Dear on the #NSale hunt, this is the bag you should be buying from this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. (Here are the rest of my picks!)

Dear Nicole Richie fans, the actress has been tapped for NBC’s upcoming comedy series titled, Great News, and if you remember her days from the short-lived Candidly Nicole (a straight LOL-fest), you’ll know this really is great news.

Dear hair woes, proof that a haircut can change your life; celebrity edition.

Dear internet giggles, earlier this week, Michelle Obama went on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden and it was basically the cutest thing ever.

Dear say it ain’t so, Facebook is predicting the end of the written word.

Dear weekend baking, mini brown sugar glazed graham cracker doughnuts.

A Simple Way to Brighten Your Bedroom for Summer

It’s no secret that bringing flowers into a room can really brighten a space and add major charm. Something as simple as an inexpensive and quick grocery store flower purchase loosely arranged adds tons of life to a space. But most of us are guilty of coming home, trimming the ends, and plopping our little bouquet in a vase on the kitchen counter or dining room table and calling it a day. But have you ever thought to choose a few flowers just for your bedroom nightstand? Or a potted plant on your nightstand? What about clipping a few wildflowers or fresh greenery to set beside your bed?

Not only will a little bit of nature freshen up your bedroom oasis, but waking up to something bright and beautiful is sure to start your day with a smile. So this summer, start a new tradition, and add flowers or greenery to your bedroom every now and then. (You’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes routine and you can’t imagine a morning without those simple blooms!)

Would You Try Cropped Wide Leg Pants?

Looking to lighten up your pants wardrobe this summer? Have you tried the cropped wide leg pants trend? After all, warmer temperatures call for a wider leg. (Psst … these adorable “short pants” are also known as sailor pants, painter pants, palazzo pants, or a gazebo pant, and many have an on-trend high waist.)

Majorly cute, and with plenty of 70s vibes, the shape is actually much more flattering than you’d think. Truly, the cropped, wide-leg silhouette is easy, comfortable and shape-friendly (especially when combined with a higher waist.) Even if the idea of such a bold pant gives you the fashion jitters, rumor has it this pair from J.Crew (though I’m digging this pair too!) and the oh-so-popular Jesse Kamm sailor pant are both universally flattering, this Madewell pair is often compared to the pricier Kamm pant and is on MAJOR sale, and this crepe pair is a subtle way to try the trend; so one of these pairs may just be worth a try-on. And if you really want to dive in, there’s an affordable and adorable version from Everlane with pleats.

Have you tried the cropped wide leg pants trend? Majorly cute, and with plenty of 70s vibes, the shape is actually much more flattering than you'd think.

The pant can also be styled up or down easily – and you know I love a look that can go from day-to-night seamlessly. This is the kind of pant you can take on vacation, wear to work, pair with heels for a night on the town, the possibilities are pretty endless.

Inspiration right this way …
