12 Leaning Wall Art Ideas

You know that gallery wall you’ve always been meaning to get around to? But the placement and the measuring and the hammer and the nails have got you rethinking your brilliant wall art plans? Yeah, I feel your pain. Put away the tools; I’ve got your perfect wall art. The lazy design dreamers solution to wall art: leaning wall art. The leaning wall art look is relaxed but still adds texture and drama; kind of a “I woke up like this” design vibe.

The key to decorating with leaning wall art is to use frames. Go to IKEA (love the RIBBA frames), Target, CB2, or shop Michaels (with a coupon, of course!) and buy basic frames to fit your prints (it’s a whole lot cheaper than having your art and prints custom-framed.) You can also layer them a bit for a bit more depth and dimension. The method works either leaning on the floor using bigger framed prints, or leaning on shelves. Try somewhere less expected, like on a fireplace mantle or a bathroom shelf, a closet or office or dining room, or a corner of an entryway for added impact.

Added bonus: you get to avoid holes in the walls (great for renters!) and it makes changing the photos and prints in your frames easier so you can update family photos and display seasonal and holiday prints and art.

  1. I absolutely love the look of layered art. We have several pieces of art leaning on the wall at our house. Initially I just put them there when we first moved in until I had time to hang them on the wall…but I liked them so much I just decided to keep as is 🙂

  2. Lexi, your blog is beautiful. I’m a media designer in the making and really the whole composition of your website is beautiful. I just had to get that off my mind. The leaning wall art is a great idea by the way, it’s the whole thought of hammers, nails and holes in the wall that have always put me off. The “leaning wall art” approach definitely makes the burden much smaller. Anyway, just wanted to leave my props xx.
