Little Love Notes

halloween black tulle covered balloon

Happy Halloween weekend! Today (Friday), is a crazy busy one for me: styling a shoot for the holidays that I cannot wait to share with you. It also happens to be our five-year wedding anniversary, so hubby and I will be squeezing in some “us” time when he gets home from work. Saturday morning I’m up bright and early to make a few yummy sweets and snacks for our Halloween festivities, then it’s an afternoon block party with our neighbors and then friends will join us for trick-or-treating and fun. How about you? Have any big Halloween plans? Are you dressing up this year? What’s your costume? As always, I’ll be sharing fun snaps on instagramfacebook, and twitter (@glitterinclexi) throughout the weekend. Follow along!

With that, a few little love notes …

Dear everyonedo you have your Halloween name yet?

Dear weekend DIYs to try, spooky tulle-wrapped balloons.

Dear weather aversea foul-mouthed weather app. Paired with this coat, I should be good to go for fall.

Dear stylish mamas, have you seen Rachel Zoe’s upcoming Rachel Zoe x Quinny and Maxi-Cosi collection. It’s a chic jet-setters dream.

Dear fellow hustlersA really worthwhile read about client psychology, and how clients want to feel like you’ve worn yourself out for them.

Dear fall parties, this may just be the perfect dress.

Dear Holiday shopping, REI won’t be open on Black Friday this year; here’s why.

Dear HGTV fans, an awesome House Hunters spoof (brought to you by House Hunters.)

Confessions of a Shopaholic: Fall Wishlist

Now that fall is in full swing, I thought it was high time I round up a few of the things on my wishlist; a.k.a., the shopaholic confessions – we’ll call this one the fall Edition. I have coats and boots on the brain as it gets colder, but so many adorable accessories have been catching my attention lately too. I’m loving Y-chain necklaces, bold sunglasses, and statement rings (think stacks of rings, or coiled full-finger rings). I’m all about easy accessories, because although I love love love them, easy is the name of the game when scrambling to get out of the house with a toddler in tow.

Confessions of a Shopaholic: Fall Wishlist

Here’s what’s topping my wishlist for fall:

H&M Textured coat : This coat is classic and feminine and totally affordable.

Janessa Leone Jimmy wool-felt fedora:  Fall; a.k.a., the season to break out your favorite hats.

Illesteva Leonard II round-frame acetate mirrored Sunglasses: Illesteva just keeps churning out amazing sunglasses, and I want them all.

Tory Burch Hallandale Flat: These flats are darling and I want them like, woah.

BaubleBar Molly Y-Chain: I love the look of a Y-chain necklace; delicate, yet makes an impact. To me, this is the new statement necklace (without all of the bulk.) I love it.

Banana Republic Womens Moto Cocoon Coat: When moto meets cocoon, I fall hard.

Theory Sleeveless Knit Turtleneck: In the name of keeping warm, I’m trying a few sleek turtlenecks and turtleneck tunics. So far, so good. Plus, oversized turtlenecks always look posh paired with sleek skinny jeans. MY tip: order your turtleneck a size up for a baggier effect.

Kendra Scott Mystic Bazaar Miles Band Rings: Stacks on stacks of gold rings are still topping my list this season, and these textured Kendra Scott rings are no exception.

Paula Mendoza Triple Ariane gold-plated Ring: I’ve had a crush on Paula Mendoza’s jewelry since I spotted it on the the Man Repeller more than two years ago.

Kate Spade New York Bethesda Terrace Quilted Logo Glove: I keep circling these gloves in my internet perusings again and again. That quilting is a classic.

Citizens Of Humanity Carlie Grey High-rise Skinny Jeans: I’m not sure any jeans fit my curves as well as Citizens. They’re just that good.

Nordstrom Texture Woven Scarf: I want one in every color!

iPhone Casetify Case in Tattoo Black Diamonds: I just got a new iPhone (finally!), so I’m looking for cute and majorly durable cases. Casetify seems to check both requirements off the list. (Psst: To get $10 off your first order with Casetify, enter code EIQNHT at checkout.)

MAC Eyes x 9 Palette in Navy: This eyeshadow palette may just have it all.

Étoile Isabel Marant Ludlow wool and alpaca-blend sweater: Oversized sweaters are the best. Easy to lounge in; easy to dress up.

Karen Walker One Meadow Sunglasses (It’s hard to tell from the picture, but these actually have an amazing gold detail at the top of the frame that is gorgeous!)

Junior BP. Fringe Trim Plaid Oblong Scarf: I love that this scarf marries a traditional plaid print with cream and maroon. Versatile and chic.

Givenchy Antigona Medium Sugar Goatskin Satchel Bag: All of the heart eyes.

Tom Ford Lip Color: Luxe, rich, and the perfect dark shade for fall (and winter).

Golden Goose Deluxe Brand Francy glittered leather high-top sneakers: What can I say? I’m glitter-obsessed. Plus, sneakers are mommy-friendly; especially as Scarlett gets into anything and everything, and miraculously, all at the same time.

CB2 3-Piece Roundabout Candle Holder Set: For my holiday table settings.

Isabel Marant Palmi metallic silk-blend skirt: All I want to do is wear skirts and dresses paired with tights (these tights are my go-to!). Yay for fall!

Stuart Weitzman Zepher Women’s Dress Boots: These low-heeled booties are ah-mazing. I want them in the leopard and croc as well!

Made for Walking: Low Block-Heel Booties

I have a confession to make: lately (as in, the last few weeks when temperatures suddenly dropped, and just like that, it became fall), I have been shunning my other beloved boots for a pair of low block-heel booties. I’m perfectly smitten. Most boot lovers have their standard pairs of flat boots (I mean, how dreamy are these glittered beauties?) and stiletto boots, but consider this: a go-anywhere boot that elevates your outfit to chic status, without a whole lot of effort. Oh yeah, you heard me right; that’s the power of the low-heeled boot.

all black outfit - street style - low block heel ACNE STUDIOS JENSEN SUEDE BOOTIES low block-heeled booties - street style fashion Stuart Weitzman Zepher Booties

The low block heel makes these boots just as comfortable as your favorite flat boot (i.e., the fan favorite Stuart Weitzman Lowland over-the-knee boots), but it gives you that little extra lift without the ouch factor. Lower block-heeled boots are also casual enough to wear day-to-day and on the weekend, but still polished enough for work, dinner out, even a party.

These are a few of my favorite picks for the season …

Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of higher-heeled booties that I dream of; the kind that are perfect for date night, but the lower-heeled boot offers up plenty of mileage (and style). I love that I can stomp around town on afternoon errands, and then easily run out to dinner in the same look. These boots were most definitely made for walking.

Scarlett’s First Birthday Bohemian Backyard Party

Whew! In case you missed the BIG news: Scarlett’s first birthday party that I styled and threw a few months back was published on Style Me Pretty Living! I am over the moon, and so happy to finally share the gorgeous bohemian backyard party photos (huge thanks to Brandi Leigh), and details behind putting together this celebratory bash.

Fair warning: this post is photo heavy (full of photo awesome-ness, obviously.)

First Birthday Bohemian Backyard Party

As a blogger, I’ll be the first to admit I get a little obsessed with the details, so when it came to our little girl, Scarlett’s first birthday party, I went all out. We had just recently moved into our new home in North Carolina, so it also happened to be the perfect excuse to get our house – well, at least the downstairs! – into tip-top shape and throw one big housewarming/birthday bash to get to know our neighbors and my husband’s co-workers.

We collaborated with Partyology, who sponsored our party and was responsible for so many of the great party supplies and décor you see throughout the party. Partyology is an oh-so-helpful creative party-planning/shopping app and site. Basically, it’s an innovative app bringing together ideas, inspiration, products and curated party supply purchases in one place; a Pinterest for party-planning, if you will. You save great party images, products and supplies to your collections (see mine, here), and then when you’re ready to bring the party to life, you can order products right through the app. Using their app, I was able to create the backyard bohemian bash of my dreams – an idea I had been playing with in my head for months.

I can’t sing our photographer’s praises enough. Brandi Leigh came before the party to photograph a lot of the styled shots and stayed throughout the party like a trooper to catch all of the extra-adorable moments. She is an unbelievable talent and made our baby girl’s birthday party look like a million bucks. There are more great styled shoots to come, so be on the lookout!

Back to the house … we had this awesome screened-in patio with no furniture to fill it (and a limited new homeowners’ budget), so we got creative. Cue the “bohemian lounge” complete with Scarlett’s teepee, layers of souk rugs, blankets and throws, floor cushions and pillows.

The activities for the kids all sort of grew from the bohemian hang-out idea. We wanted the kids to have a great time, particularly because we had so many young kids in attendance (and my own mom has always been a rockstar at making amazing food for the grownups with plenty of memorable stuff for the kiddos.) I found bubble sticks at Walmart in the clearance section and covered them in gold polka dot stickers from Target to give as party favors. We also had temporary tattoos and lollipops on a tray in the kids “lounge,” butterfly wings decorating the chairs, and plastic mason jars with lids so the littles could run to their hearts content with juice in hand. Bubbles, tattoos, a teepee, and lollipops: obviously the boho lounge was a big hit.

And lest we forget the food …

Scarlett thoroughly enjoyed smashing her own mini cake (big thanks to Whole Foods for making us a perfect little chocolate vegan cake for her!)

We kept the food simple: a homemade toasted pine nut caprese tortellini salad; homemade artichoke dip with chips, crackers and carrots for dipping; trays with petite sandwiches and chicken fingers; and a cheese and fruit board; plus tons of dessert.

Admittedly, I had a lot of fun with the dessert table. I am a dessert fiend, so I knew I wanted to make that the focal point. I made s’mores bars and chocolate chip cookie bars (both foolproof and so good), put out plenty of fruit, dark chocolate salted almonds, brownie brittle, an amazing cake and cupcakes by Sugar Euphoria that I decorated with real flowers, and a vegan birthday smash cake from Whole Foods for Scarlett who has a milk protein allergy but loved her cake all the same (thank goodness!) We kept drinks simple: a big vat of iced tea, sodas, juice, and craft beer (my husband had a lot of fun picking local North Carolina beers to try.)

I’m still pinching myself over how well the party turned out. This was my first party on my own (without my family’s help back in Miami), so I worried how everything would turn out. Thankfully good food, good drinks, and good friends is all you really need for a great time!

20 Adorably Spooky Halloween Treats

The countdown to Halloween is on, and I’m busy stocking up on ingredients to make a few of my favorite spooky Halloween treats. This Halloween, our neighborhood is putting on a block party (complete with crafts and snacks) and then it’s off to trick-or-treat, so I want to have plenty of yummy sweets for the kids. (I love that our neighborhood is full of young families like us! They’ve made us feel so welcome, which is making the transition to a new city and state without our families so much easier.)

I love that Halloween treats are fun to make with the kids; the little ones have so much fun covering everything in sprinkles and spooky candy eyeballs. Though she’s still a bit small, last week Scarlett and I made candy corn rice krispy treats, and on Friday we’re going to decorate cookies for Halloween. I also want to make a few homemade candies, like these homemade twix bars. There are just so many creative ways to play with candy this Halloween!

Little Love Notes

horseshoe milkmaid braid hair tutorial diy - plaid

I’m glad the weekend is finally here though admittedly, I’m a bit bummed that hubby has to work straight through the weekend. Ahh, the life of a doctor’s wife. I have plenty of planning to do though – I’m putting together such a fun shoot next Friday with the help of a few amazingly talented creative ladies (and I think/hope the whole shoot is going to be awesome!) How about you? Any fun weekend plans? As always, I’ll be sharing fun snaps on instagramfacebook, and twitter (@glitterinclexi) throughout the weekend. Follow along!

With that, a few little love notes …

Dear Drake lovers, have you seen his new video? I might be obsessed with Drake’s dancing.

Dear fall beauty, trying this DIY horseshoe braid updo ASAP. (It’s basically reverse milkmaid braids – which are oh-so-simple, and I love the look. I’m a big fan of getting my hair up and out of my face as temperatures drop. Does anyone else’s fine hair turn into a tangled mess as it gets colder?)

Dear fellow mamas, a laugh-out-loud discussion of the news, “We are pregnant!”

Dear Gilmore fans, in case you haven’t heard the news, Gilmore Girls is back, baby!

Dear West Coasters (and South Floridians), this company will mail you fall foliage.

Dear music lovers, this 81-year old man stuns while playing in a Nashville guitar shop.

Dear weekend bakingcheesecake pumpkin spice quick bread (that I’m thinking about turning into muffins; you know, in the name of portion control.) Yum.
