Tiny Tattoos Out and About

I’ve always had a thing for tiny tattoos. Admittedly, I am boring. For too boring for a tattoo. I mean, I don’t even have my ears pierced for goodness sake. (I know, I am the last girl in the world without pierced ears.) But there’s something about the tiniest of tattoos – a little bit edgy, a little bit understated, easily unnoticed – I adore these tiny statement pieces. Photographer, Austin Tott, clearly a member of the tiny tattoo fan club, created a series of images where he matched miniature hand-drawn body art with corresponding backgrounds. Quirky and beautiful, don’t you think? (I’m particularly fond of the quotation marks and the ampersand … of course.)

5 Beauty Essentials to Shimmer this Summer

This post is promoted by Target.

The summer sun can be harsh. We’ve only been in North Carolina a few weeks, and already I’m amazed at just how hot it can get here. Don’t get me wrong, Miami was hot (year-round), but the sun just beats down on you here in North Carolina. In the midst of the crazy weather, I’m searching for the best products to beat that melting-in-the-heat look. Anything that can offer that quick pick me up that will leave you feeling like a summer goddess; that’s what I want.

These are a few of my favorite Summer beauty essentials:

  1. First up: Pixi Glow Mist, exclusive to Target, and my new best friend. This stuff is your skin’s new magic potion. Pixi Glow Mist is an all-over glow mist that gives you a radiant, dewy effect; i.e., glowing, luminous and smooth complexion in a bottle. Enriched with 13 natural oils plus propolis, aloe vera and fruit extracts, you can use it before makeup to hydrate and protect, after makeup to set and add that dewy finish, really anytime to refresh, hydrate, and get that summer glow.
  2. I also can’t stop using the Maybelline Face Studio™ Master Glaze™ Glisten Blush Stick in Coral Sheen. (Exhibit A.) The color is delicate and dewy, but can be layered for maximum “pow,” especially after a long day at the beach, when you need just a touch of something to brighten up your skin. The creamy blush formula is created with liquid shimmer pearls and shea butter that just glides on and provides blendable blush color and smooth, even application. Because it’s in stick form, it’s also the perfect makeup on-the-go. I find myself throwing this blush stick in my purse almost every morning. Totally my summer go-to.
  3. L’Oreal® Paris Elnett Hairspray has long been a favorite of mine. It’s the stuff most hairstylists will tell you is their holy grail. This is the hairspray that holds, adds volume, and that satiny soft-to-the-touch finish.
  4. Sparkly nail polish that goes on quick, adds a fun bit of shine to your outfit (without being too glittery … not that I believe there is such a thing!), and is just perfect for summer. Have and always will love OPI. (Check out the full list of my favorite nail polish colors for summer, here.)
  5. Last but not least, I top my summer out-the-door look with a wide-brimmed hat to protect my skin from the harshest summer rays and, of course, to stay stylish in the heat. On my last trip to Target, I scooped up not one, but two hats for summer – this wide-brimmed hat with braided sash and this adorable straw cloche hat (because choosing between the two felt nearly impossible, and because, really, who can ever just run into Target for just one thing?)

Also, not to self: trying to shoot photos of your makeup while holding a little one: not the easiest of feats.

Little Love Notes

Oh goodness am I ever glad it’s Friday. Hubby started at Duke on Wednesday, and I’ve been learning the lay of the land with Scarlett, but this weekend we have a dinner on Friday night with his class and an ice cream social on Saturday (major throwback sorority vibes, and I’m loving it.) We have to get as much done as we can over the weekend, because he’s about to start working like crazy at the hospital: overnights, and more. Meanwhile, I’ll be sure to share a few fun snaps on instagram and twitter (@glitterinclexi). How about you: any fun weekend plans?

With that, a few little love notes …

Dear perfect shade of red, this one – created by Estee Lauder and Kendall Jenner (and available for a limited time only) – is everything I want in a bright poppy red summer lipstick and more.

Dear Instagram crushing, married in New York: an ode to the ever-chic city hall wedding.

Dear kindness in art form, this man asked strangers to decorate his car with a sharpie; the result is pretty great.

Dear rumor has it, a third Princess Diaries could just be in the works. #shutup

Dear DIY’s to try, after seeing this, I feel like I need to make myself a crown, just because.

Dear movie junkies, all 15 Pixar movies, ranked from worst to best. Do you agree?

Dear weekend baking, olive oil and sea salt brownie cookies … wow.

Dear SCOTUS, thank you. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 on Friday that it is legal for all Americans, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, to marry. So proud of our country and our justice system today.

Life Lately

I thought it was about time to share another little recap of what our family has been up to – from unpacking, decorating (a.k.a., shopping for furniture and rad antiques), eating our way through the Triangle Area, and exploring. So here you go …

We’ve been driving around the neighboring cities, throughout the nearby towns, checking out areas in Durham, Downtown Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary and Carrboro. Each city has its own unique character and vibe, and I’m starting to love how everyone all over the Triangle seems to just hop in their car to check out an event in one of the bordering towns. There are great outdoor concert series, restaurants, fairs and festivals, and everyone seems to make their way over to them each weekend. Scarletts-first-pretzel---11-months

We took a tour behind-the-scenes at Counter Culture Coffee. Since we were in the touring mood, we also took the beer tour at Bull City Brewery where we learned a ton about the beer-making process and Scarlett had her very first (soft) pretzel. Needless to say, she was all about the pretzel.

We’ve also gone a bit Farmers Market crazy; there are just so many of them around here. And it seems every weekend another little festival or market pops out (strawberry festival, blueberry festival, you name it, North Carolina has it.)

We also visited the Raleigh Flea Market, my new hangout. This place is amazing. That picture above is of a strawberry balsamic popsicle – oddly delicious.

Though the temperatures are creeping up, walking through stall after stall of amazing vintage and flea finds, plus amazing furniture, home goods, cute independent boutiques, jewelry, great food, you name it, is so much fun. We’ll definitely be frequenting the flea market more as Fall starts to roll in.

I should have bought ALL of those vintage rugs.

Everyone and anyone in the Durham area will tell you how much they love Guglhupf, this adorable German restaurant and bakery. Not to be missed: the scones and the cucumber salad. So good.

We’ve also enjoyed fixing up the house and making breakfast at home before we start our crazy errand-packed days to get our new house into shape. We’ve been taking advantage of hubby’s wide-open schedule for these last few weeks before he starts residency. (He’s actually in orientation at the hospital now!)

Peaches, peaches, everywhere.

I’ve also found myself picking up fresh wildflower bouquets everywhere we go.

This past weekend we went to Asheville and Lake Lure (where Dirty Dancing was filmed!), so I’ll share more about that next week! I also have some fun home improvement/design posts coming up, and eventually (if I can get my shiz together, of course), I’ll be sharing a full tour of our new home! #wishfulthinking

Light-Filled Bohemian Nursery and Playroom

Now that we have all of this room in our new house, we have a great big playroom in mind for Scarlett. This home in particular (check out the full home tour on Jenni Kayne’s blog, Rip & Tan and on The Hive Mag), is gorgeous in every way and chock full of inspiration for the littles. It seems one very lucky little lady, James, daughter of the homeowners, a stylist and an interior designer/artist, has all that and more – a gorgeous light-filled bohemian nursery and a mid-century inspired playroom complete with play table, teepee, and pretend kitchen, to boot.

I absolutely love the light-washed wood built-in cabinets and shelves; they make for chic and convenient storage.
