Little Love Notes

Dear Summer, how on earth did you fly by so quickly? I can’t believe this weekend is already Labor Day weekend (and my birthday is on Sunday!) We’re headed on a weekend cruise today, a.k.a., an end-of-summer hurrah and I cannot wait. The next few weeks after that are officially crazy for me, and though I’m just a tad overwhelmed, I’m also really excited about things to come. Friday through Monday we’re on a boat, and Monday afternoon I’m on an airplane headed for New York City.  I’ll be in the city for a week running in and out of shows, brand and PR meetings, and long overdue lunches and dinners with blogging besties.  Wedge launching a brand new site somewhere into that mix, and you have my early September forecast.

Dear post man, forgive me – I swear I’m leaving the city so your job schlepping all of my pre-NYFW-panic-shopping packages should be coming to an end.

Dear New York, if you could keep it under 80-degrees next week I would be forever thankful.

Dear Caribbean, if you could help me fake a tan that’d be awfully kind of you – given that I’m the “Miami” blogger, I certainly can’t show up to NYC disguised as Casper the friendly ghost, now can I?

Dear Fab Sugar, “The Emotional Life Cycle of New York Fashion Week, in GIFs,” is basically awesome.  And equally terrifying.

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Pretty Little Dresses

Hi, my name is Lexi, and I have an addiction to pretty little dresses.  There’s something about a frilly feminine frock that sets my heart all-aflutter.  (How’s that for a whole lot of alliteration? #nerdalert) Sweet a-line cuts, lace details, and really any dress that describes itself as a “babydoll” anything, and I’m sold.

And my last-minute New York Fashion Week shopping panic is making it worse.  Exhibit A …

Spanish-Style Hollywood Hills Home

Full-time mom and part-time actress, Katie Tarses, lives in this jaw-dropping 1931 Spanish-style house in the Hollywood Hills with her husband Matt, a TV writer and producer, and their three kids.  Her eclectic style features mid-century touches and free-spirited boho chic elements, all the while remaining resolutely family-friendly.  “My home is colorful and casual—nothing’s ever too formal or precious,” says Tarses.

From the staircase covered in gorgeous Spanish tiles, the well lit solarium filled with bohemian accents, patterned rugs, sheepskin throws, a hacienda-style wood ceiling, a great barware collection, to the lush potted plants, this home is carefree, colorful, and warm.

Of her home aesthetic:  “I’m constantly moving things around to make my space seem fresh,” says Tarses. “I might stack books on my coffee table to give an item some extra height, then I’ll move them to my mantel and set candles and a plant in their place.”

“I collect items I love—with bright colors and interesting stories—and rarely get rid of anything because there’s nothing better than that eclectic, layered mix that develops over time.”

Grow Your Hair Long + Strong

I’ve never been one to spend a ton of money on my shampoo and conditioner routine.  I’ve used the same drugstore brand combination since middle school, and all in all, my hair is pretty standard.  But in the last few years, I’ve discovered my affinity for my blow dryer, hair iron, and curling wand, i.e., major danger zone for my damaged locks.  When L’Oreal asked me to try out their Triple Resist shampoo, conditioner, and treatment, I was more than happy to oblige, knowing it was time for a change.  I had always heard that your hair can fall into a sort of rut, that a new shampoo and conditioner can make all the difference, and oh how true that is.

My test subjects:  L’Oreal Advanced Haircare Triple Resist Ultimate Strength Solution, $6.99, L’Oreal Advanced Haircare Triple Resist Reinforcing Shampoo, $4.99, and L’Oreal Advanced Haircare Triple Resist Reinforcing Conditioner, $4.99.

L’Oreal‘s newest trio helps to reinforce hair from root to core to tip leaving hair stronger and more resistant to breakage and hair falling out.  The shampoo leaves your hair incredibly shiny and unbelievably clean.  The conditioner itself even feels incredibly soft going on, so it’s no surprise when your hair dries just as soft.  The products also smell great and keep your hair glossy without looking greasy at all.

A few other helpful tips and tricks for growing your hair long and strong:

  1. Massage your scalp when you shampoo and condition your hair to promote hair growth.  (And don’t forget to use those L’Oreal Advanced Haircare Triple Resist products to help reinforce your ‘do.)
  2. Take a daily vitamin.  Both a women’s multi-vitamin and prenatal vitamins aid in hair (and nail) growth.
  3. Hydrate.  It’s no secret that drinking a healthy amount of water every day improves your overall health, but drinking water also aids in healthy hair (and nail) growth, not to mention that well-hydrated glow.
  4. Lay off the heat.  Whenever possible, skip the hot irons and blow dryers and opt for soft updos and loose ponytails to tame your locks.
  5. Have your hair trimmed as often as possible.  I’ve always been wary of chopping off any of my hair, but taking off even an inch every three to six months actually helps promote growth and cuts away the split-ends weighing your hair down.
  6. I’ve also heard amazing things about using coconut oil hair masks at least every other week.  (Use anywhere from 2-5 tablespoons of coconut oil – depending on the thickness, length and dryness of your hair, microwave the coconut oil for a few seconds to soften, comb through hair, twist up and keep in a shower cap, allow to soak into your hair for at least twenty minutes and no more than about an hour, and then wash as you normally would.)
