The Jumpsuit

The 70s are back in a big way – from hippie fringe to psychedelic prints to sky-high platform stilettos, all shades of 1970s flare are clawing their way back into couture.  This season alone, the runways were filled with 1970s touches, but the most daring and quickly pervasive – the jumpsuit.  Obviously, the twenty-first century version is a careful step away from John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever white nylon cat-suit.  The romper, a shorter-lengthed version seems to be coming in at a close second to the recent popularity of the jumpsuit.

Designers have filled their Spring and Summer line-ups with the jumpsuit, and big names including Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler, Nanette Lepore, and Thakoon all have versions of the grown-up onesie.  Celebrity fans of the tailored one-piece include Shenae Grimes, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, and Penelope Cruz, and the three eldest Kardashian sisters.  Though seemingly a daring fashion choice, when styled right, the look is chic, effortless and surprisingly comfortable.   What say you – will you be wearing a jumpsuit this season?

I love jumpsuits! I started wearing them again last fall, and I think they’re adorable when done right. I even wear a more conservative, tailored one to work with a big belt and a fab pair of pumps. I always get tons of compliments. :). It definitely has my vote!

Hey Lexi! I have petite frame and i’m 5’1″. Can I rock a jumpsuit? I’ve always been eager to try one on, but like “Becks” said it’s hard to find one that’s made well. Do you know where I could find one? Thanks! PS Love your blog! It’s one of my favorites 🙂

    • Thank you SO much!! And yes, you can definitely rock the jumpsuit. I too am a shorty and I wear whatever I want. Though I can’t lie – with jumpsuits and rompers, I NEED the heels. If you want to try a jumpsuit, try a style with a higher waist, that way the legs appear longer. Drop waists are flattering for the upper body but can truncate your legs. And don’t forget your heels!

Perfect! I will definitely go find one then, thanks. And I will not forget my heels, they are totally my best friends.

  3. Jumpsuits are so cute! I’m still at the romper stage…I’m not quite brave enough to wear a jumpsuit yet! I’m not sure it’ll work for me – I’m a little too short! They are so cute though!

I do love this jumpsuit trend. Wearing them tends to be a bit more challenging, but definitely worth the extra effort for the gorgeous outcome.
