Ballerinas and princesses rock tulle skirts effortlessly. So does Carrie Bradshaw. But outside of center stage and HBO, can a grown up really wear a TUTU? Survey says, yes (… if worn well.)
Rule 1 – The tutu can be chic. The tutu and ribbon lace-up ballet flats – flop. You are not a ballerina, you are a fashionista … at least for today. One statement piece at a time. Particularly when playing dress-up.
Rule 2 – Pick a theme and stick with it. My favorite version of tulle is dressed down with black. Black boots, black tights, black tank. But Spring’s nudes, blushes, and neutrals look ethereal and dreamy with the right layering of tulle. Don’t add zebra. Don’t add sequins.
Rule 3 – Fashion is 4 parts style, 6 parts confidence. I won’t walk out of the house if I feel YUCK. I will put on red lipstick and then step outside. If tulle feels overwhelming, opt for a ruffled or layered lace skirt – go for volume and femininity (operation tutu = success).
Rule 4 – Never forget to twirl.
